April 22, 2010: The Williams Stadium expansion blog is back after a few days off as we went down to Greenwood, S.C., to cover the 2010 Big South Men’s Golf Championship (Congratulations once again to Robert Karlsson, Big South Golfer of the Year and championship medalist, Freshman of the Year Max McKay and Coach of the Year Jeff Thomas ... for more info, click here). While we were gone, the Branch & Associate, Inc., crew made great progress on the upper deck club level seating area, as the project now has seven completed raker beams (out of 18) and beams No. 8 and 9 are being framed in. Last week, Liberty University Athletics photographer Les Schofer had a chance to take some great aerial photos of Williams Stadium, including the one pictured below. Along with tomorrow’s blog entry, we are going to post a complete photo gallery of Les’ photographic findings, giving you a different perspective of the expansion project.
Schofer is friggin' fantastic. If you get the hardcopy LU Journal in the mail, his stuff is in it.

Let's hope that photo gallery that they're going to post is the kind you can view instead of the normal gallery that they put up.

Does anybody know what the purpose of that giant blue tarp is? I've never seen it actually covering anything. It seems like it spends all of it's time wadded up in the aisles.

couple of shots show it covering the seats while they are pouring the rakers. Gotta keep the chairbacks/bleachers clean, I guess.

Alright medic, the webcam now refreshes every 15 minutes. And you can play it like a time lapse. You've obviously got some damning pictures of somebody in the SID.

Too bad the overhang seats weren't ready for JMU last year. Someone could have made a killing scalping those babies.

so I have been keeping up with the stadium expansion and have been pretty impressed with all the plans. One thing that was mentioned on here over and over was how the press box was going to run anywhere from the 15 yard line to the 15 yard line to the 5 yard line to 5 yard line. It seems to me from the progress now being made that the actual press box, suites and club room with actually be more like 30yd line to 30yd line with balconies that would extend out further on either side. This is not a slam on anyone just that it will be much smaller and more I-AA sized that what I was envisioning with all the talk of it being bigger than the original drawings. Still very excited and looking forward to 5 years down the road when the whole project is complete.

I was looking at the pictures that were released of what the the first phase of the expansion and it looked like the press box was going to extend from the 20 to 20 yard line. I believe SJ that it will be from the 9 to 9 yard line. I just wish that it was published on an article that the athletic department would release in order to put this question to rest because I myself would like concrete proof of where the press box is going to extend from. I wish that it would extend from endzone to endzone. Now that would be cool. :D

Jeff Barber has said a number of times that it will be from the 7-7, whether it will be 7-7 or 9-9, it doesn't really matter. Can't judge how big/small/D-1AA or D-1 it will be until September. Just need to be patient and enjoy the updates and photos. Can't jump to conclusions of what you think it will or will not be when it's only May.

Are you kidding? Sure, we can! That's what we do here.

Apparently the SIDs don't have a "quote" function on their blog.
One of the pictures in our blog post today was taken underneath the bottom of the raker beams, which shows that the upper deck club level seating area will overhang the lower seating area by roughly five rows (these lower level seats will be one of the more coveted seats inside the stadium when it rains on game day, outside of the main club room and the 16 individual luxury suites … imagine how much a ticket could have gone for on Sept. 26, of last season had Liberty had its new stadium ready when the Flames hosted James Madison during a torrential downpour).

Okay, so that wasn't an exact quote, but they should have at least cited the source.

When you see this place in person, and just take into account the corner extensions, it looks big time. I didn't think those would make that much difference.

I think the corner extensions add another 2,000 seats (500 x 4 corners).

If you didn't already know.... the 300 TON (that's over 400,000 lbs) crane is now being assembled on the playing field in front of the west stands. This is mammoth sized. Check out @LUADJeff (twitter) for some pics on the crane. I'm sure pictures and and article will be posted about it on the Libertyflames.com blog as well.
