Here come the sour grapes from up in the Empire State ...

Roane State Community College forward John Brown really enjoyed his recruiting trip to UAlbany last week.

“John loved his visit to UAlbany,” Roane State coach Randy Nesbit said. “It was his favorite visit.”

Unfortunately for UAlbany, Brown wasn’t the one making the call. John Brown chose Liberty this week, a decision that Nesbit said was made “98 percent” by Brown’s parents.

A couple of interesting comments from Sly's link:
1. I guess this is one case where being a top party school doesn’t pay off.

2. Are his parents moving near the Liberty campus.. Wow.

As a Citadel fan, you guys are lucky to have John Brown. He is an absolute beast under the glass. When watching him, his play was a lot like Dennis Rodmans, minus the flops. There is no one on the floor that is going to out hustle JB. He will provide an instant spark to your team.

He's a swing player who played mostly at the 3. He averaged 11 boards a game last year in JUCO and 6 as a Freshman in limited minutes at the Citadel. Sounds to me like he was not only under the glass, he was very busy down there.

Given that Sanders was your leading rebounder last year- It would not prove indicative to think that rebounds could only be accumulated in the paint by post players... especially if the JUCO is shooting tons of 3 pointers (i.e. VMI).. It sounds like he's a high energy, good motor type & those guys just hunt the ball..

John Brown made history, becoming the first men's basketball player at Roane State Community College to earn All-America honors.

Brown, a 6-foot-4 wing/forward who has signed to play at Liberty University, earned second-team All-America from the National Junior College Athletic Association.

He averaged 17 points and 11 rebounds as a sophomore. He shot 52 percent from the field and chipped in 3.8 steals and 2.8 assists per game. The Savannah, Ga., product is also a Dean's List student.

BUMP

Thanks to Lang's fine article in today's fishwrap:
Brown bullish on the boards for Flames
By Chris Lang
Published: January 27, 2011
Liberty forward John Brown has a clear understanding of what he does well, and what he can do to help his basketball team. Brown can rebound. He can attack the baseline. He can get create havoc defensively by mucking up passing lanes.

He has no delusions of being a spot-up 3-point threat, or a true back-to-the-basket post player. And he’s fine with that.

"You have to have one or two things you’re really good at," Brown said. "My thing is rebounding and being able to react, and that’s gotten me to where I am today."

Some John Brown extras

Thursday, January 27, 2011

Liberty forward John Brown gave me a ton of stuff for the feature that ran in today’s News & Advance sports section. Fifteen minutes on the ol’ digital recorder, to be exact. Again, with the print story getting a little long, I wanted to post some of the other highlights of the interview here. I’ll be back later this evening for the UNC Asheville pre-game post.

* One of the more interesting things about Brown is his shot, and if anybody has seen it up close, you’ll know what I’m talking about. Both at the free-throw line and on the floor, the left-handed Brown has a curious hitch in his shot, almost like his elbow turns into Jell-O into the middle of the shot motion. It hasn’t affected Brown too much this season. He’s tied for second in the Big South in field-goal percentage.

Jeff Hartsell of the Charleston Post & Courier writes a weekly column about the Big South/SoCon (I'd say about 75% of the time it is focused more on the SoCon)...today's column is about John Brown...

Ex-Bulldog Brown rebounds at Liberty

http://www.postandcourier.com/news/2011 ... t-liberty/
"I've surprised myself a little bit," said Brown, whose athleticism and energy were key components of The Citadel's 20-win season  two years ago. "I thought I would do pretty well, but I never thought I'd average a double-double every game. I put high expectations on myself when I came in. In order for my team to do well, I have to play at high level, and I pride myself on doing that every night."

Your guys guard was at el cid and some CC right? What is the reasoning behind him transferring or whatever it is all over the place? Is he a Mike Holmes, or something else going on?

He is the anti-Mike Holmes. Terror on the court, class act and a good student off. Citadel just wasn't a fit. Not sure why he went the JUCO route rather than transfer and sit out. It sure has worked out well for us though!
