It's true. Guards that can shoot the three are a dime a dozen. That's why your Cinderella teams have great guards. Good big men are much more hard to come by. Everyone knows you can get good guards to the Big South. The hard part is getting the good post players here.

Have you been watching the NCAA Tournament the last 10-15 years? The gym rats who can shoot lights out when they're hot come out of Corn Crop Nowhere University, We We're a Junior College 20 Years Ago A&M, Direction Schools (ie. Northern This, Southeastern This) or Hood State every year and upset a couple of big name teams and sometimes even make a run. The good teams already have good shooters. What about the Iranian kid on N. Iowa...he wasn't even recruited! Good shooters are a dime a dozen, they come from anywhere and everywhere. You don't have to be a big name school to end up with a 5' 8' 160lbs guy who can shoot lights out. Shooters are a dime a dozen. Slashers, D guys, and big men aren't.

It's been real, and it's been fun, and it's been real fun, but I'm going offline now 'cause the work day is done. I don't have internet at home, but I'll be back tomorrow to read what everyone says; it's a great way to pass the time at work. Have a good one folks :)

Ask Calapari if he wouldn't have traded almost any one of his blue chip hyperathletic guards for a dependable knock-down 3 point specialist against WVU.

I think the reasons given as to why he's not playing this year run much deeper than what has been publicly stated.

I sense a distinct lack of desire, and that's a bad sign for a kid who's probably always been better than everyone he played with. How will he react to the adversity of the next level? I guess we will find out. Don't count me as a believer at this point though.
I don't think that is being fair to the young man at all. Do you have any specific information as to why he didn't play, or are you just assuming?

Personally, I am concerned about the fact that he didn't play, and I would be regardless of why. The reason is really none of my business, but I'm not going to assume it wasn't valid if I don't know.

Substitute "Baird" with "McMasters" and you've got yourself a point.

Athletes fit better into Cal's dribble-drive offense. There isnt really a lot of room for a 3 point specialist b/c of the offensive philosophy. Plus, several of the great shooters need to be "coached up" and you can't really do that in a 1 and Done program like Cals

Another big recruit and we might even have some skilled size coming off the bench

That’s Awesome!!! The stat that really gets me excited is 17.2 boards a game. Now we have someone else who can push Jesse to lead the team in rebounds…lol :P

But seriously 17.2 rebounds a game is impressive wherever you play.

He possesses excellent athletic ability, strength and toughness. I speak for our entire program when I say we are thrilled to add Sommy to our 2010 class, and we are excited about the opportunity for him to have an immediate impact on our program.”

Remember, he's just a freshman. Let's not start expecting him to lead the team in rebounding or challenge for a starting role before he even graduates high school.

This is not nearly the done deal it would be if he were your typical American HS player. However, as Sly posted a while back, the Nigerian players who go to HS in the states have been having a much easier time getting approved by the NCAA clearinghouse than players who sign while still in the Nigerian educational system. I'd feel a lot better about it if he had been in the States more than one year.

Great news on the Ogukwe signing. As mentioned previously 17.2rpg is a sick stat no matter what the competition is.

We can bring in some pretty good size next year off the bench with Baird, JVP, McMasters or Ogukwe--all over 6'7.

We certainly can TD...having JVP, Somto and either Carter or Baird on the floor together would really help us work any soft matchups underneath
