Even though we dropped in the coaches poll, we picked up additional votes.

Liberty vote tally in the coaches poll
Week 11 - 273
Week 10 - 258
Week 9 - 201
Week 8 - 67
Week 7 - not in the top 25

Good call Sum... so much for getting over excited about dropping. Still don't see how Jacksonville State is higher than us in the coach's? :dontgetit

It should be noted the computer polls have us in between 13 and 17, with 17 being the most common number.

There's a good chance we hop up 5 spots in the GPI this week to 16 or 17.

Last year our GPI at the end of the year was what, 22? 23?

Yeah the GPI is key. If we can jump up in that to 17 or better. We are sitting pretty. Well, I guess pretty is too nice, but we are in a decent position.

How is HC ranked 4 spots ahead of us when we beat Laffy by WAY more than they did? (yes i know they have an autobid, but its the principle of the thing)

Because one game does not a season make?

JMU should be ranked way higher than us by that logic. And Hofstra over JMU. Etc.

And Liberty beat Lafayette by four more points than Holy Cross did. Not exactly a huge discrepancy there.

If life worked like that everything would be messed up, lets take the Colonial Conference:

Richmond got beat by Villanova
Villanova got beat by New Hampshire
New Hampshire got beat by Massachusetts
And...Massachusetts got beat by JMU

Thus if you looked at game by game JMU should be the best right? IT just doesn't work like that!

Fair enough Chris.

Sivart, if you're looking head to head, you have to take the most comparisons that you have. I.e. Lu vs. Laffy vs. HC

As far as JMU goes, they also played the rest of those other teams which you aren't taking into account. So your comparison conveniently leaves out the results of those other games, while mine with LU/Laffy/HC uses 100% of the head-to head comparison between those teams.

If you were to compare LU/Richmond/Nova/NH/UMass vs. JMU, THEN you would have a valid comparison with head to head verses a common opponent like I suggested.

E Illinoise is losing to Tenn St. now on Espnu. This would be a big upset and would help our playoffs chances

i was thinking the same thing earlier but I dont think it would, actually, since theyre bound to get the AQ regardless. But we would move up the rankings one spot

Eastern Illinois is currently slotted as the winner of the OVC. Their spot in the playoffs is as a conference automatic qualifier, not an at large bid. This game will not impact Liberty's playoff hopes in a positive or negative way.

We should move up one spot in the GPI as a result which would be a positive.

Never mind. EIU is #22 GPI as it stands now. :(

Too bad EIU is down 21-10, I guess we just need to worry about SBU and hopefully the rest of the pieces will fall into place

#22 (GPI) Eastern Illinois lost 21-10 to #103 (GPI) Tennessee State which doesn't look like it would help Liberty sitting at #17 (GPI). However, E.Illinois was ranked ahead of LU in all three polls! Thus, we should move up one spot in all three polls at the very least. :fineprint

Yeah this game doesnt really affect us one way or another, but it doesn't hurt for EIU to lose.

if we wanted to get waay into hypotheticals we could talk about how them losing could potentially hurt other GPI's of teams and possibly help us

Not really. No one in the OVC is in contention. The only OOC game against a contender for them was SIU, and they're a #1 seed lock if they win this weekend.

Believe it or not, this is actually bad for us. This opens the door for Eastern Kentucky to steal the OVC autobid and could dump #13 E. Illinois into the pool of at-large candidates with us. EKU is 5-5 overall but was only a game behind EIU in the conference standings and holds the tiebreaker by virtue of beating the Panthers back in October. Granted, it would take a miracle but EKU has to beat #15 Jacksonville State on the road to pull this off but, two days ago, I would have said that it would take a miracle for Tennessee State to have won the game last night. Eastern Illinois did the Flames no favors here.

EKU will lose, no worries. Even if they didn't EIU isn't getting an at-large over us.

EIU losing to TSU drops them from 13... and below us in terms of overall resume. That's a pretty bad loss, combined with the loss to EKU and the drubbing by Penn State, I really don't think they're ahead of us. They're 8-3 in a weak conference with no OOC games worth a dime, and a loss to a 3-7 (now 4-7 thanks to the win) team. That's a Presby style loss.
