I was wondering if anyone had any info on when wireless power will becoming out for the consumer? I am kinda looking for a new laptop and will be in the next few years. I want to wait it out till the wireless power comes out. It looks legit.

By "wireless power" I assume you mean the inductive charging stations like the one Palm made for their Pre phone?

If so, Dell just introduced a new laptop last night which has a docking station that uses inductive charging. It's a really good looking laptop (for a PC) and the early reviews say it seems to be built with quality. However, the cut the speed of the components to get it into such a thin enclosure and the price is still up there. So, you can't have it all.

If you are not referring to inductive charging solutions you'll have to fill me in, because I don't think we're any closer to wireless energy over any distance than we were when Tesla was showing off his coil designs.

It's kind of available, but not in the way you're thinking of. Like Palm has that stone or whatever where you put your pre on it and it charges. I've got a waterproof phone that charges on a base where there's no physical connection. So stuff like that is already in the market place. But something like your computer being in the middle of the room and being charged from some kind of "router" seems like it's pretty far off. I'm not one of those people who think cell phone signals or wifi can mess with your body really, but this sorta seems like it could be bad for you or something depending on how it actually works.

If I understand correctly, it is possible to transmit electrical power wirelessly by focused microwave beams, which is probably as hazardous to health as it sounds. I recall some discussion of having solar power stations in orbit and transmitting the juice down this way. Possible in theory, but pretty much sci-fi at this point.

Duracell has also made adapters and charging stations so you can do this with many other phones. I haven't checked, but it wouldn't suprise me if they have them for laptops.

Update:
Not for laptops yet, but here's the link for Duracell's product, called MyGrid: http://www.duracell.com/us/mygrid/default.asp

Dell Z600 laptop -- wireless charging, wireless docking station.

http://arstechnica.com/business/news/20 ... ess-it.ars
Dell has designed an elevated laptop stand that uses induction to wirelessly charge the Z600 whenever it's placed on the stand. If you're going to charge by docking (as opposed to just plugging a cable into the laptop), then this is a better way to do it than lining up proprietary ports.

Yeah, again it's just induction power. Nothing new and a gimmick, if you ask me. What's the difference between placing the new one on the stand versus the old one? They both have to be on the stand to charge and the hold ones had a port on the bottom that plugged in. I guess it shaves some junk out of the design, but meh. I feel the same way about the Palm Touchstone thing. Big deal.
