Politicians get savaged on the late night shows. I've watched Letterman for years and he's said much worse about other politicians who all still came on his show. Hillary Clinton, John McCain and Rudy Giuliani all come to mind as people that have caught some really harsh stuff from him but continue to visit the show. He's a libertarian and dishes it out pretty evenly. I don't buy that he was intentionally talking about the 14 year old (or that he knew the other one wasn't at the game) and Sarah Palin does dress like a slutty flight attendant. She works the look for everything it's worth.

You're a politician and you're upset that a comedian made jokes about you? Please. This is a grab for media attention and I think it's pathetic. As much as I can give is that it's tired to still be joking about Bristol at this point, but she is the one who decided to put herself out there touring for abstinence campaigns. As an adult daughter of a politician who got knocked up, I don't think she can expect that move to buy her any leeway. She made that choice.

I'll never get behind "You shouldn't say that." stories from public figures. When you enter into that arena, you get what comes with it. The only reason this is a story is because Letterman said it. There are plenty of people with an audience just as big that could have said it and no one would bat an eyelash. Letterman is an easy target.

Lame.

Perhaps I'm a little jaded, as I only watch Letterman in video clips online, and rarely watch his show on tv. Please give me an instance where he has said harsher things than calling a politician a slut and saying that their teenage daughter (both Willow and Bristol are still teenagers) got knocked up by a professional baseball player, all in the same night. To act like Letterman doesn't have an agenda against the GOP is just ignoring what he says. Also when does calling Bristol a whore become off limits, in your opinion? I understand making fun of her during the campaign, but we are nearly a year away from that time. I'm probably the wrong guy to criticize comedy (I like stupid comedies), but what is so funny about calling a politician and her teenage daughter sluts? Why is it pathetic that Palin rips back at him? Honestly, someone calling your daughter a whore would get no reaction from you? Even as a politician? Letterman is an easy target, because he has had been pretty politically motivated with his monologues that past 2-3 years.

Again, I would say the same thing if he was giving this treatment to anyone on the left. With the exception of Bill Clinton who is a slut!

People still call Monica Lewinsky a slut or a whore and we're ten years past that. Why's it ok for her and no one else?

So having a sexual relationship with a married president, as an adult, is the same thing as a teenage girl getting pregnant from her boyfriend? I mean, I understand the criticism Bristol received, but I'm not going to lump a 16-17 year old who got pregnant from her boyfriend, with a 21-22 year old intern who had an affair with the most popular politician in the world. I just don't see why making sexual jokes about politicians children is so acceptable, and Palin is considered pathetic for criticizing it.

Like I said earlier, I'm probably just too sensitive. I can respect if you guys find this stuff funny, or acceptable. I just don't, and believe it to be 100% politically motivated in a Bill Maher type comedy sense, and deserving of criticism.

come on, Janet Reno was spoofed as a giant man in drag on SNL and she appeared side by side with him. You don't think that's worse than somebody making fun of your clothes? And as much as you seem to not like it, and really it shouldn't be, politician's children are just as famous. It's not fair for them, but it's just the way it is.

I TOTALLY understand making fun of politicians and celebrities, no doubt. This just seemed bitter to me. Calling her a slut in one part of the show, while calling her daughter a whore in the other makes Palin "pathetic" when she swings back at the comedian?

I'll concede I'm being overly sensitive if you can name me a politican's teenage kid that has been treated this badly by the media and comedians. Regardless if she got pregnant prior/during a campaign, I cannot remember any politicians child being called a whore on national tv. I don't know if I recall a politican being called a slut on national tv without evidence either, but I guess it is pretty common now? Than again, I don't watch too much tv these days. (maybe I should quit wasting so much time on the internet  )

You keep saying that. Letterman didn't call her a slut. He said she dresses like a slutty flight attendant. Get it? It was a joke about how she dresses, not about her being loose. I keep seeing this in editorial rants about this and it makes me angry. It's spin and it's not right. If you're going to gripe, don't distort the facts.
belcherboy wrote:...while calling her daughter a whore in the other makes Palin "pathetic" when she swings back at the comedian?
He also didn't call her daughter a whore. He made a joke (which I took to mostly be about the baseball player and not the daughter, but whatever) about her daughter getting knocked up, which she already did once, and then went out and campaigned for abstinence. She's an adult who is a celebrity and I don't think it matters if she chose to be or not. She's aware of it and she chose to open herself up to the jokes by continuing to go out and promote abstinence. It doesn't meant it's tasteful to make fun of it, but comedy is rarely tasteful and I don't see it as being over the line.

Yes, I think it makes Palin pathetic. If she was intelligent as she's made out to be she wouldn't be slumming in the comments of the "Hollywood" comedians. Politicians ought to have a little dignity and to me that means not getting in the ring with the peanut gallery who frankly ought to be beneath the level of work you're doing. Except that she's not doing any real work. She's a media babe, she knows it and she loves it. That's why she dresses like a slutty flight attendant.

Not doing any real work? What, like running an entire state? Or accepting awards for the WORK she's doing for children with disabilities? I don't get the animosity towards her at all.

She's being a celebrity. That's her job right now and I don't consider it real work. Still, that was a rabbit trail on my part. Even if she's doing the best work any governor has ever done, if she's truly offended she ought to know better than to dignify a comedian with a response. I think her PR people seized on it to keep her in the headlines. Any press is good press at this point.

Being a Celeb seems to be the quickest way to get into office...so call it what you may, I dont mind seeing the Rep's playing the Dem's game...if only we can get them to start lying to the people as much as they do then it'll be a fair fight

She didn't, though. She was on the radio show for a friend (the same guy who put out the 'how Obama got elected' documentary), and he asked her what she thought about the situation. She just said that David's act was pathetic, and that he completely missed the reason for her being in New York -- to raise money for autism.

That's all she said. This isn't like 'let's keep this in the headlines'. Letterman was the one who responded, and then responded again by inviting her on the show. Sarah hasn't said anything else to the matter. This isn't a feud and we're blowing this completely out of proportion.

And then Palin goes on the 'Today' show to demand an apology not just to her, but to all women...

I guess I concede! He didn't call her a slut, he just said she looks like a slut (TOTALLY DIFFERENT), and he didn't say her teenage daughter was a whore, he just implied that she got knocked up by a professional baseball player, which was really meant to be an insult to the athlete.

Sounds like you and Bill Clinton would have gotten along NICELY back in the late 90's!

Because it doesn't mean you are calling someone a slut when you say they look slutty? (I would think slutty clothes make someone look slutty, but I'm no expert)

How about the other thing. Did he call her daughter a whore?

Saying someone looks slutty is completely different than calling them a slut. It's the same concept of saying someone's acting like an idiot and calling them an idiot. Being like something is not the same as being something. There are plenty of people who act like Christians but aren't really Christians.

"You're acting like an idiot."

That doesn't mean I'm calling you an idiot. It means I'm pointing out to you that you're acting like one.

"You're dressed like a clown."

That does not mean I think you are a clown. It means I think your clothes look like clothes a clown would wear.

"You sleep like a bear."

That does not mean I'm calling you a bear. It means I a noting that you sleep in a manner similar to a bear.

This thread is pretty funny. Some are mad b/c they are sensitive about jokes while others are mad b/c they are sensitive about others being sensitive about jokes.

I guess as humans we are all sensitive about something wither it be about others being sensitive or other stuff.

just because my wife will awesomely dress like a slut every once in a while for me, it doesn't make her a slut....its simple english...

as for your 2nd question....truth hurts....i'm sure the ride she took on the local dipstick wasn't the first one bristol had experienced...

as for him mistaking willow for bristol, quite a gaff, but a gaff....who cares...

So you are honestly telling me that he wasn't calling her in ANY way a slut? Especially when he called her daughter a whore in the opening monologue?

I'm not sure most women would feel like they aren't being called a slut, if someone told them they dressed like one. Just my two cents.

What truth is that? That she sleeps around? What evidence is there that she is willing to sleep with random people? Do you think all teenage girls who get pregnant outside of marriage are whores? Perhaps I'm not viewing them in the same way.

Yes. That is exactly what I'm saying. He said she dressed like a slutty flight attendant. If anyone should be upset here it's flight attendants, but even then his statement doesn't say they're all slutty. He was making fun of the way she dresses and I agree with him. She dresses like a slutty flight attendant. I doubt Todd minds, but she has to realize it opens her up to jokes from comedians. I know. It's shocking.
belcherboy wrote:Especially when he called her daughter a whore in the opening monologue?
He didn't call her daughter a whore. You keep saying that. He never said anything about Rodriguez paying her. Geez. You're failing on both reading comprehension and vocabulary. Where's Cider Jim when we need him?

He made a joke about the wrong daughter get knocked up. Which was, as RubberMallet pointed out, a gaffe. Nothing more. Had he not made that gaffe, I don't see why it's such a big deal. The girl got knocked up once and he joked about it happening again. I fail to see the big deal. And no, he never made a joke like this about another politician's adult child. Except maybe the Bush twins when they were out getting drunk and walking straight into the sidewalk. I you're over 18 and from a political family, mind your P's & Q's or prepare to be made fun of. Don't like it? Blame the parent that decided exposing your life to the media was a solid call.
belcherboy wrote:I'm not sure most women would feel like they aren't being called a slut, if someone told them they dressed like one.
Since you aren't sure, you probably shouldn't make the generalization then.

I really didn't care that much about this until Palin decided to turn it into a PR stunt to keep her name in the papers. She's feigning outrage for the sake of press coverage and I think THAT makes her a whore. A media whore. Which is far worse than the other kind, IMHO.
