NCAA Men's And Women's Basketball Rules Committees Announce Rules Changes, Including A Focus On Sportsmanship

Wednesday, May 6, 2009

PHOENIX --- The NCAA Men’s and Women’s Basketball Rules Committees both added a point of emphasis focusing on sportsmanship between student-athletes and slightly expanded the use of the television monitor at its annual meetings, which were held May 3-5. All rules proposals will be sent for membership comment and considered by the Playing Rules Oversight Panel before taking effect.

I'll leave it up to you folks to summarize and discuss. I'm feeling lazy, but wanted to make sure this was posted.

I saw this yesterday and the foul shooting thing is stupid. It encourages hard fouls at the end of the game. I get to injure your player and then choose a 45% FT shooter to take his shots on top of that. Good idea. It seems like this was a knee jerk reaction to one situation in this year's tournament. I don't even remember the specifics except the dude was obviously not injured and just wanted their best FT shooter to take the shots. It got a lot of play on sports talk.

I like no charge under the basket. You should call this the Man-up-and-try-to-actually-play-defense-dook rule.

you know what NCAA, stop being a bunch of pansies and just add the freaking semicircle like the NBA has. everyone that knows anything about the NBA and the NCAA knows that this ruling is trying to accomplish the exact same thing the semicircle does, so why not just add it so refs have even less of a judgment call to make? it's not like adding a small dotted line on each end of the court is going to cost schools that much money, unlike the expensive moves in regards to the three point line and the requirement that every school have a shot clock on the backboard (a rule that goes in effect two seasons from now, I believe)...

But, combine this new rule with the ability for them to go back and look at the video to determine wether a foul was flagrant/intentional/technical for contact, I think you can escape that. Like, If someone hits Jesse while he's in the air and flips him over so he lands on his head so he can't shoot the free throws, they can look and see that it was intentional/flagrant/technical and we would then get to choose a new shooter. The only time you're going to see this come into affect is if someone randomly rolls an ankle on a foul. And even then, they might be able to man up and shoot rather than risk having Shaq shoot free throws.

You could've gone all day and not say that.
