Yeah, it's a tricky situation but to imply that purposeful illegal activity was going on is a bit much. Most NCAA violations are "accidental or coincidental". That's not the point. Your school still gets punished. The NCAA is not know for being the beacon of logic. If Layer gave an "OK" then LU could get punished as well. As a former head coach and current assitant coach he knew that this would at the very least look "shady". Yet, he did it anyway. I don't think anything was going on, but why put yourself in that position? To many it would even appear to be an intentional slap at the school. He could have went anywhere to play a pick up game of basketball. Why here? If you don't think it is an issue then call the NCAA and report it and see what happens.I loved RK when he was here and I was hurt and frustrated when he dumped us and ran, but I still have immense respect for him, however; that respect just dropped another notch.
Logical guess at what went on:
1) The McKays went to church at Thomas Road.
2) They then stuck around and had lunch/visited with friends.
3) Ritchie found out the players were having a run in Schilling.
4a) He asked if he could come along.
4b) He was invited to play.
5) The McKays went back to Charlottesville.
Now, don't get me wrong, I don't like the fact that he's playing here this soon after or that he was wearing UVA shorts but this stuff happens everywhere. You get pickup games with coaches and players from different schools. Go to the Triangle in North Carolina and I bet you'll find a mix of UNC, Duke, NC State, NC Central, and God only knows how many other schools running together. I can almost guarantee Wojo has played in the same pick-up game as Hansbrough over the past four years.
