It could be anywhere from tomorrow to 3 months from now before we hire someone. I hope it happens within the next 3 weeks because this is prime recruiting time.

And Jeff is apparently going to the final four this weekend to talk to coaches. I think we need an outside hire, but I hope we can keep Soucie and Allison on staff.

I hope we hire Layer, but I hope we broaden the search a bit this time around and find someone who will be here a while...

If Layer or Soucie isn't the main guy, then Soucie won't be here.

Umm, yeah it actually does. If Layer is hired as HC he will probably keep Soucie as Associate.

If Soucie is promoted, he'll still be here, as well.

If neither of those guys become HC, then neither will be here next year.

I don't think he would touch this team, but that would be a GREAT fit at Liberty. IMO, you surround him with young guys, and have him hand pick his predecessor. Overpay him, overpay his staff, whatever you got to do to get 2 years out of him.

GREAT although VERY unlikely choice.

NOW that is something that Liberty should go WAY out of their way for!

Okay I see what he's saying but the wording threw me off.

Yeah I agree completely. Soucie will stay if Layer becomes the coach. So let's hire Layer!

We shouldn't hire someone based on whether or not one or two recruits will stay.

I agree. We recruit the right coach for our future, not the right coach for what seems like right now. I mean, this is tough for me to say because I want Joel to come and Chris and Bo and Ovie and JCS, but a good coach is still going to get more out of players than making the wrong decision at coach just to keep a recruit or two.

No I'm not saying to hire Layer so Soucie will stay and therefore our recruits will stay. I'm saying that I think Soucie is a valued commodity here and I don't want to see him go. I'd also like to see either Layer or Soucie become the coach so that Allison and Eaker will stay as well..

Right, I agree but since your signature says hire Dale Layer I am assuming you believe he IS the right coach for the future and coincidently the right one to keep a few recruits around.

Dale Layer (born 1958) is a former head men's basketball coach at Colorado State University. Layer was named the Rams' head basketball coach on April 11, 2000, replacing Ritchie McKay who left to take the vacant head coaching job at Oregon State. Layer led Colorado State to the NCAA Tournament in 2003 in just his third season at the helm, quicker than any coach in school history with the exception of Boyd Grant.
Layer was fired by Colorado State on March 12th, 2007. His career record at Colorado State was 103-106, but was only 31-71 in conference play. He was hired by Ritchie McKay on April 2nd, 2007 as an assistant coach at Liberty University. Following a 16 win season at Liberty, Layer was hired by new Marquette University coach Buzz Williams as an assistant on his staff. Ironically, Williams had previously been an assistant under Layer at Colorado State from 2000-2004.

If Layer replaces McKay, This will be no different than the past history between Layer and McKay. McKay Leaves or gets fired from a position and then Layer comes in and replaces him. I believe JB needs to look beyond Layer or Soucie and hire someone outside of the current coaching staff. Past history shows it didn’t work out well for Colorado State, what makes you think it will work here at Liberty

Just don't hire Sherman Dillard. Or Dean Keaner. Or Pete Gillen. Just say no.

Of course, the best of both worlds might be to hire a high profile coach and get Soucie to stay on as an assistant coach.

If we couldn't find a big name, I'm all for Soucie taking the job for a couple of years. He has PLENTY of experience, and would probably do well with keeping our current recruits. I'm not sure he wants a head job, but if he was interested, and we have no big alternatives, it might help us not implode next year (by implode I mean losing a bunch of recruits, and more possible transfers).

Who knows, he might be the long term guy we're looking for.

To make this clear, because I can tell people are trying to read too much into Pannone's comment, he wasn't trying to throw an ultimatum at Barber. He wasn't saying -- hire Soucie, or else. He was expressing that Perez really likes Soucie, and if Soucie got the job, Perez would definitely still be coming. If Soucie doesn't get it, Perez could still very well come to LU, but it wouldn't be quite as rock solid.

Also, Layer was on already Colorado State's staff when McKay left.

You guys have named almost everyone that breaks every rule. So much for values, can you buy a player or two, just call the previously mentioned. At least the wu boys don't hide that the need to win nixes everything else ! One thing to the credit of of some of you is that you value your own and respect your asst. coach
