So I finished watching Annapolis, and regardless of whether you liked the movie or not (it was panned by several critics); my point of mentioning it was in regards to university traditions. The "Brigades" idea is a really cool tradition. Even though some will no doubt object to the violence and health safety aspect of it, having a tradition like the brigades at LU would have been cool (my dad told me stories of how his alma mater had something similar when he was in college in the early 70's in the Northeast. They had a Fight Night in the late fall of each year open to all male students, he told me it was run by an organization on campus to raise money. They had weight classes and freshman through seniors could sign up to participate. He said it became an event around campus where guys would make a night of it with their girlfriends, elevating it to an annual tradition, where getting dressed up, going out on a dinner date and then coming to the "show" became the norm (like the trappings of a pro bout.) Bouts were three rounds, boxers wore traditional head gear and traditional gloves, you were responsible for your own cornerman/cutman. He said it was a great atmosphere.)

Though many will probably object, it would be cool to see some kind of bona fide classic traditions like that established (not tired ones like ringing the Liberty bell at 3 in the morning.)

In addition, I'll throw this out there: Now that they brought back wrestling, have club lacrosse and hockey, any one in favor of seeing an amatuer boxing club team (or NCAA team) formed at LU? (I anticipate that the answers to this will be most interesting)

One of the fraternities at Texas runs a fight night to raise funds. They fight guys from other frats and student organizations. My brother-in-law fought in it one year and he had current WBC world champion Jesus Chavez working his corner. The guys fighting had to train for several months but it was a great show.

I think its a great idea. Yet another way to make the LU experience unique- plus, another way to reach out to the community.

Jesus loves you, now come to fight night where we show you just how much by beating the crap out of each other.

I'm not opposed to it. I'd watch, I'm too much of a baby to join in.

Boxing would definitely be cool, and possibly an instant hit (accidental pun), although I think it would turn out to be more of a fad with the fans. Attendance would wane after a month or two, and the fight club would be basically the fighters and a few hardcore fans.

I'm pretty sure Rock Royer would approve!

I don't know if there is an amateur boxing club in town or not, but up here boxing is pretty popular at all levels (in Philly) and I'm betting a club on a local college campus could have an "urban outreach" type of appeal.

We used to box in our dorm lobby before the lobby was turned into a room. Many were hurt. We used to get pretty decent sized crowds watching from outside.

We used to box in our dorm too and Stephon Leary and Bailey Alston were the toughest to fight. I mixed it up a few times but I don't like to get hit in the face. Leary was tough because he had the fastest hands in the dorm and a round house punch that was very painful. He threw a snowball at me one time and hit me in the back and a real tear came to my eye. Steph played baseball in high school. Alston was tough because of his freakishly long reach. We were the same height but his wing span was 10 inches longer. That is what made him an exceptional basketball player too IMO. I am not opposed to fight night but I would see it develop into more of a fad over time as well. Who knows though with that sort of thing. It could take off.

I think that would be great for morale on the mtn. Also I like the movie also. If I am not mistaken the girls can enter the fight, of course againist other girls.

I would say to just bill it as a one Friday night in the fall as an annual fall tradition, and it would have to be manned by folk who are actually involved with amateur boxing (maybe some Charlottesville, Richmond or DC connections)...(the organization at my dad's alma mater actually brought in several certified/sanctioned referees to man the bouts to make sure it was run with strict standards.) While student life can handle refereeing intramurals, whatever organization sponsored it would need to hire outside people who were sanctioned to man the fights; otherwise it wouldn't have an air of professionalism and the fights could quickly dissolve into brawls. The matches would be technically scored just like amateur fights (think olympic style boxing)...my dad said that most of the flyweight guys were usually TKO'd by decision of the referee after a round or two once they couldn't remember their names and a couple of knockdowns by the upperclassmen (who incidentally had three years to prepare by getting humiliated by their own upperclassmen.) He said that there were a few knockouts, but that most guys overestimated their fitness and inner-Rocky (looks much easier in the movies and shadow boxing in the mirror than it actually is.)

I'm all for it as long as we can have pyrotechnics and a performance by James Brown.

We had fight night in our dorm every Friday. Only rules were you had to wear the face/head protection. We only had one knockout, which might have been the funniest moment of the entire year.

For some reason, SLD's don't make savage boxers.
