So I finished watching Annapolis, and regardless of whether you liked the movie or not (it was panned by several critics); my point of mentioning it was in regards to university traditions. The "Brigades" idea is a really cool tradition. Even though some will no doubt object to the violence and health safety aspect of it, having a tradition like the brigades at LU would have been cool (my dad told me stories of how his alma mater had something similar when he was in college in the early 70's in the Northeast. They had a Fight Night in the late fall of each year open to all male students, he told me it was run by an organization on campus to raise money. They had weight classes and freshman through seniors could sign up to participate. He said it became an event around campus where guys would make a night of it with their girlfriends, elevating it to an annual tradition, where getting dressed up, going out on a dinner date and then coming to the "show" became the norm (like the trappings of a pro bout.) Bouts were three rounds, boxers wore traditional head gear and traditional gloves, you were responsible for your own cornerman/cutman. He said it was a great atmosphere.)
Though many will probably object, it would be cool to see some kind of bona fide classic traditions like that established (not tired ones like ringing the Liberty bell at 3 in the morning.)
In addition, I'll throw this out there: Now that they brought back wrestling, have club lacrosse and hockey, any one in favor of seeing an amatuer boxing club team (or NCAA team) formed at LU? (I anticipate that the answers to this will be most interesting)
