From Lang's article:
Liberty (22-11) now must wait until after the NCAA tournament selection show March 15 to see if it earns an invite to one of the three “other” postseason tournaments. The NIT is unlikely, but there’s a chance LU could be chosen to either play in the CBI or the Collegeinsider.com postseason tournament.

Anybody know anything about the CBI or CI tournaments?

I still say that "Any tournament is a good tournament."

I agree, especially with a young team you take anything you can get to develop your team

If we are invited, we will play. And there is a very good chance we'll get a call.

I'm torn. It's would be like going to the prom with the fat girl and have to sit with the rest of the mutants at table nine http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.p ... ble%20nine. I'd just as soon blow the whole thing off...

Keep in mind that you run the risk of losing money by going to these things... Rutgers Football just announced that they lost $150,000 by heading to the Gallery Furniture bowl. If we can host a game, then maybe we go for it, otherwise let's regroup for October.

The biggest benefit is more practice time. With our young players, we can never have enough.

I agree with the any tournament is a good tournament line of thought. Sure, it's not the one you were shooting for all season... but it gives the players a chance to play some more basketball. I don't know how Anthony Smith feels about it, but I know if I were a senior I'd love the chance to keep playing.

Didn't UVa lose about $150,000 for their participation in the CBI last year?

Basketball-wise I think it's a no-brainer that you want to play in any postseason tournament that you can. I agree with TDDance234 in that the extra practice time and extra game(s) can only be benificial for the younger players on a team. Sure, it's not the thrill of the Big Dance, but at least they are still playing.

Business-wise, you have to be careful in making a decision to accept a bid. If your school can't afford to lose money on one of these tournaments, the administration should really think about declining a bid despite the benefits to their basketball team. Seems that most money is lost due to having to guarantee a certain amount from gate receipts, so there might be more of an effect on schools that host tournament games. Not too sure on that though...

UVa lost a ton of money on the CBI last year because the CBI requires something like a $60K guarantee to host a game. And the Cavs hosted three games, IIRC.

Liberty has a much more likely chance of going to the new collegeinsider tourney, which will cater more to mid-majors with 20 wins.

Liberty has made exactly two postseason appearances in nearly 20 years of Division I basketball. Any postseason invite will do wonders for recruiting and the psyche of the players, making them feel as if they've earned something.

I can understand UCLA turning its nose up at an invite to such an event, as it has done with the NIT in the past. But, with all due respect, Liberty is not UCLA. Any postseason exposure is good exposure, and I'd guess there's a zero percent chance such a bid would be turned down.

Just in general about the CBI and CI tournaments, I think the only requirement is that a team has to have an overall record of .500 or better.

The CI says you must have a winning record against DI comp. to qualify. We have an 18-11 record against said teams, and obviously qualify in that regard.

The CI website also says that: "Participating teams must finish the regular season with a winning record against division I opponents. Teams whose conferences have less than fifty-percent (50%) of their teams participating in the NCAA and NIT tournaments will be given higher priority for selection into the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament."

This bodes really well for us possibly getting a bid. This is only a 16 team tournament, however, but if VMI makes the NCAA's and Radford gets the Autobid to the NIT, I would say we're virtually a lock to make the CI.

I'm a pretty avid follower of college basketball, but I have to admit that I've never heard of these tournaments. It sounds like this is the first year for the collegeinsiders tournament. How long has the other one been around?

Yall should definitely make at least one of them. The NIT might be a stretch, but not that big of one in my opinion. Obviously I'm a fan of the Big South, but I'd think that NC State vs. Liberty would be a much more entertaining matchup than say... NC State vs. Georgia or some other bottom feeding SEC/Big 12 team.

CBI started last year, and this is the first year of the CI tournament...

And I don't think we're going to make the NIT. If we had beat Clemson and then either DePaul or St. Lou, then maybe. But UVa and GMU aren't enough to get us to the NIT, in my opinion.

I don't think Liberty gets in the NIT whatsoever. If Radford loses tomorrow, they have an auto bid. If VMI loses tomorrow, they whipped you guys twice in the past week or so, that would give VMI the better shot.

Regardless, if a Big South team gets an NIT bid, you'll see them first round in Blacksburg playing VT.

I wonder if the CBI or CI have a TV package? I doubt it. That could mean more work for Flames Television! Nice!

It looks like the College Insiders is part of Fox Network of sports and I was reading somewhere the games would be on the Fox Sports Network channels. That would be nice, could have a chance to watch them play up here in PA.

I think we have a good shot at College Insider touney, don't forget Richie McKay is part of a voting panels for there mid-major poll. So he has to have some contact with these people, how much I don't know, but I would think he can have a little influence.

What Duggar says about the post-season tournament:
Baucom understands, though, that bids to the National Invitation Tournament, College Basketball Invitatational and Collegeinsider.com Postseason Tournament have less to do with stats and more to do with program prestige.

“I think there are 129 positions now with the two new tournaments, and I don’t think there are 129 teams that are 24-8,” Baucom said.
Is LU a top 129 team?
