Men's Basketball Falls in Heartbreaker to VMI 103-102

More Information: Box score

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Coastal Carolina University men’s basketball team (7-9, 1-3 Big South) dropped a heartbreaking 103-102 decision to VMI (13-2, 5-0 Big South) Jan. 10 in Lexington, Va. Senior Steven Sexton (Monticello, Ky./Wayne County) hit a jumper as time expired, but the shot was ruled a two instead of a three, giving VMI its ninth straight victory.

Coastal Carolina was down 99-93 until a three-pointer from freshman Dexter Moore (Bluefield, W. Va./Hargrave Military Academy) at 1:21 pulled the Chants to within a possession. Redshirt junior Logan Johnson (Knoxville, Tenn./South Doyle) then had a steal on Austin Kenon and a layup from classmate Joseph Harris (Lejeune, N.C./Lejeune) made it 99-98 Keydets. On VMI’s next possession, Chavis Holmes hit a jumper with 14 seconds left to push the lead back to three. Sophomore Anthony Breeze (Greenville, S.C./Greenville) then was fouled and hit two free throws to make it 101-100 VMI. Holmes was fouled and made two free throws at the Keydet end, setting up the final play. Sexton banked home a jumper, which right away was called a two. The referees went to the video replay to confirm their call, making the final 103-102.

they are coming off a big time emotional game and will probably still be off mentally. We will probably have over 5k there, considering we were over 3 tonight w/o a lot of students back yet. Athletics is going to promote this to death, so there should be bigtime attendence. I think we should take care of CCU without too much trouble

I saw Sexton's shot to tie the game at VMI. Great game to watch btw. It was fun Sexton definitely stepped on the line but I heard through the grapevine that he actually called glass on the bank shot that he hit.

It seems like Harris should be a senior by now. His work on the boards gives me some reason for concern in a game that otherwise should be considered a victory.

Nobody works harder on the glass than Harris. He is like AZ Reid in that way. Pack is a decent big man. Sisinni is shooting well right now and Anthony Breeze has a nice power game off the bench. Should be fun though.

They lost by that much to Coker???

So we should win by over 40 then right?

I don't know what happened that night but I don't expect it to be the same. They played VMI pretty tough but VMI was without Travis Holmes.

he should indeed be a senior this year. his injury just 8 games into the season last year gave him a medical redshirt.

if coastal keeps the turnovers low and rebounds the basketball like they should, the chants might just possibly keep it close.

Hmmmmmmmmmmm. Did Coastal play 40 games last year? I thought 20% was the maximum you could play and get a redshirt.

I believe you can petition for a medical redshirt with more than 20% played. It is just like petitioning for a 6th season due to injury. I think it is a case by case basis. I have lost a lot of knowledge in this area since moving to the broadcast booth from coaching though so I will look forward to another responder with more knowledge.

come on out and see the 15th ranked Flames!! at least thats what Jonathan Falwell said in church yesterday...can't complain though if it gets more people out to games!

and before anybody says it, I know he saw the mid-major ranking story or somebody told him about it, and he just assumed it was national ranking...oh well

should be a fun one...first day of classes which means students have no excuses not to come tonight...

"The Myrtle Beach fishwrap's preview"

The Myrtle Beach Preview is wrong in its TV coverage. The game is on TV tonight!!! MASN is covering the game. Looking forward to watching us play on TV as it has been awhile since I have seen us play.

I don't believe MASN is widely available on the Strand. But it is indeed available this evening. Unfortunately it doesn't look like it will be on channelsurfing (much to my dismay).

I'm going to the game tonight, so I won't be able to do updates. Hopefully someone watching on MASN can.

I emailed the guy in Myrtle Beach and told him the channel numbers on DirecTV, Dish and Verizon Fios since all of those should be available in SC. I will do the updates from the game tonight...Just kidding. The speed of the game is way, way too fast to be messing around of FlameFans

I send IM's to my SID who feeds me timely information. Vince is the man behind the curtain so to speak. Ok I do a ton of research too but Vince is the guy who gives me the up to minute nuggets and now he doesn't have to walk all the way accross the room. Great system. SJ you can write me too during the game if you wish :P
