The Seth Curry Admiration and Spice Society

If compiling weekly one-liners about obscure Division I programs in Virginia has taught me one thing, it's this: Seth Curry is a mid-Atlantic miracle. Last night? A career-high 30, including 25 in the second half, as the Flames notched a comeback win over Northern Colorado.

Now, of course, everyone in the country knows about Curry No. 2, but I feel like the Atlantic 11 voting community was at least six to eight days ahead of the curve on Stephen Curry's little bro. And in fact, a couple weeks ago, I proposed to my editor a trip to Lynchburg, which I've heard is lovely in late December, for a Seth Curry retrospective. But at this rate, the kid will be on the cover of SI within a few weeks, under the headline: "Sweet Vindaloo! Flames Newest Curry Heats Up Paneer and Far, Might Be Second to Naan."

I posted this back on March 24:

Everybody keeps saying I hope Seth is half as good as Stephen. Why? Why can't he be every bit as good? Sure it would be great for him to be half as good, but there's no reason to believe he can't be as good. Stephen is a pure shooter, just like his dad. We can say the apple didn't fall too far from the tree. I don't see it being any different with Seth. The one thing that has yet to be determined about Seth is will he step up on the big stage. Stephen does, as he has proven with 100 points in 3 NCAA tourney games. But I don't see why Seth won't be just as good. Thus far in Seth's career, he has taken the same path as Steph: both are late bloomers with no "big" boys recruiting them very hard. Both look just alike and are baby faced.

Maybe I'm just a sipper, but I think I'm just a believer.

The 6-1 freshman, a high school all-state performer in North Carolina, is averaging 20.5 points a night, and his resume includes a 26-point showing at Virginia and a 24-point effort at Clemson.

Curry steps out of his brother’s shadow at Las Vegas Classic

The Liberty Flames finished a strong performance in Las Vegas Tuesday, defeating USC Upstate 77-64 and claiming fifth place in the Las Vegas Classic while improving its record to 9-4 on the season.

Freshman point guard Seth Curry followed a career-high 30 points on Monday night with 18 points and two steals in the dominating win over the Spartans. Despite the career achievement, and his team's strong start to the season, Curry found himself answering all-too-familiar questions this week about a player other than himself.

"A lot," Curry said, when asked how much he's asked about his older, All-American brother, Stephen. "All the time, man."

Sure Dickie V has mentioned my name a couple times and ESPN highlighted me in their magazine, but that’s only because I happen to be a product of this basketball family. They even put Stephen’s picture in my magazine article. Probably because there aren’t photographers at any of my games. Does Jerry Falwell even know my name? No matter, Mr. Falwell , along with the rest of the nation, will know my name when I continue to score 20 a night and help lead his school to the Tournament.”

College Basketball: Who is No. 1?

COLUMBUS, Ohio — While doing some research before West Virginia’s 76-48 victory over Ohio State on Saturday, I was scanning through this year’s incoming top 100 classes from both rivals.com and scout.com.

Poring over some statistics from the first part of this season, I struggled to come up with the answer to this question: Who has been the country’s top freshman in college basketball this season? We know it’s not Brandon Jennings, since he’s been hanging out in Europe.
(And after watching Ohio State’s B.J. Mullens and West Virginia’s Devin Ebanks on Saturday, I can assure you they don’t deserve to be part of this conversation.)

So here are a few candidates:

Seth Curry, Liberty: Yes, that Steph’s little brother. But he’s also the leading freshman scorer in the nation at 19.7 points per game. Who is second? That would be Virginia’s Sylven Landesberg at 19.5.

Freshman Recession
A disappointing freshman class? Not so fast.

A little over two and a half years ago when David Stern decided to enact an age minimum for the NBA there was very little question that it would have a significant impact on the landscape of college basketball. With two full years of the rule in tow and a third building steam, the changes to the game have been great for the fan and less than perfect for coaches.

For the casual college observer, what hasn’t been great about the age limit? Think of all the stellar amateur careers that would have never been if not for Stern’s concern with youngsters getting themselves in too deep with the League: Greg Oden, Kevin Durant, Mike Conley, Brandon Wright, Spencer Hawes, Thaddeus Young, Derrick Rose, Michael Beasley, O.J. Mayo, Kevin Love, Eric Gordon, Jerryd Bayless…you get the point.

And here comes the Seth mention ...

When the marquee names aren’t performing, it seems to drag everyone else down as well. Has anyone noticed that Seth Curry (aka Baby Steph) has quietly been dropping nearly 20 points per game for Liberty? How about the highest scoring freshman in the ACC; no one would guess that it’s Virginia’s Sylven Landesberg. Maybe we’re just spoiled; maybe we took the last two years for granted. Was it fair to expect a third straight season with a Big 12 freshman averaging better than 20 and 10 or another dynamic point guard (or three) to emerge this season? Probably not.
