Here's a kid who just quarterbacked his school to a state championship up in Maryland.

Baltimore Sun wrote:More than a few recruiting analysts were reportedly impressed by Dunbar quarterback Jonathan Perry’s play during Crab Bowl practices this week. The 6-foot-2, 195-pounder felt he boosted his stock as well.

“I performed great in practice, but just OK when I was out there [on Saturday],” Perry said. “Even though it was an All-Star game, ultimately sitting out [and rotating with other quarterbacks] hurt me with the interception. But I’m a winner.”

Perry, who finished 5-of-11 for 49 yards passing and one pick, mentioned Liberty and Hampton as the two schools recruiting him the hardest. He’s also heard from Illinois and Connecticut, but said he’s primarily “focused on school” right now.

They are indeed. And that school is both a basketball and football factory.

Well at least he can't complain about our mascot going from being the Poets to the Flames sounds like an upgrade to me.

The local middle school in Lynchburg is also the Dunbar poets, named after Paul Lawrence Dunbar. A recruiting visit should also include the home of Anne Spencer on 1313 Pierce Street, where the Harlem Renaissance poet lived. Study

I agree that Tavon Austin is a stud. But he will be a stud for WVU. We'll get to see him this fall.

There is quite a history behind what is now Dunbar Middle School. Prior to integration it was Dunbar High School, and was the only HS for black students in Lynchburg. The Poets name goes back to that time, and IMHO it is pretty cool that they kept it. I remember an article in the fishwrap a few years ago about a reuinion of some of the surviving members of one of their more successful basketball teams.
