Two of our taller freshmen who are not listed as guards have not played much recently, and there has been talk of possibly redshirting them. To keep this discussion on topic and away from the other threads, I've started a new one just for redshirting rumors, speculations, and opinions.

Austin and Carter.

We will find out for certain on Monday if that is the plan for Austin. If he doesn't play against Anderson then I think it's safe to assume the plan is to redshirt him.

Ok I am speaking from a little ignorance here but I kinda like the idea of redshirting these guys for a couple of reasons.
1. It gives both of them some time to bulk up and mature physically.
2. It spreads us out more over a couple of graduating classes and lessens the impact on the team down the road when this class goes.

Downside is:
1. No depth this year. It hasn't hurt us yet but I am a little concerned about later in the season.

If EITHER have played...the redshirts would have to be of the medical variety.

Then I guess Austin's not going to 'shirt.

I'm surprised Austin hasn't got more time--but most of his minutes have been scooped up by James Spencer and Bill Weaver.

It wouldn't surprise me to see Carter RS, though.

The NCAA did away with the "medical" redshirt deal. Now it is based on percentage of games played as to the availability of a redshirt. In the past you had 5 years to complete 4 seasons of eligibility, without the injury factor. Then if there was an injury beyond the redshirt year you could petition the NCAA for a 6th year, ala Jason White at Oklahoma. It is now simply 5 years to play 4. If a participant participates at the beginning of the season, but does not play in more than 20% (i think) of the games they are eligibile to apply for a redshirt. So i would think that Austin would qualify either way. Having said that i'm not sure I really see that happening.

Interesting. I have not had to deal with the paperwork end of it for about 5-6 years, so I was not aware it changed. Thanks.

I will admit, I could be wrong, but that is my understanding of it.

Typically a player is eligible for a redshirt exemption can play in no more than 6 games (or 20% of games based on an average of 30 games- not counting Puerto Rico tourneys, etc which are typically exempt).. that's been my understanding since they did away with the medical & non-medical terminology..

Thanks for the update, Chris.

And I consider it great new that both will be shirting this season. I'd rather have those guys healthy and fully healed next season rather than a dinged player this year and next.

I had been figuring all along that Jeremy was redshirting since he had surgery on his foot/ankle. They have been pretty close mouthed about Carter's injury. It seems to be a lower leg problem of some sort though.

It said carter had a stress fracture in his foot - tried to play through it - and now they're giving up.

But the other good news is that Austin Smith will be playing regularly soon?

I knew Jeremy was and was worried about having nine sophomores next year, but with Carter redshirting that means we only have eight which I guess is better. I think it'll be good for Carter.

Carter has a stress fracture in his right leg. Not surprised of this development. I asked Ritchie about him Saturday, and he said that McMasters would be out for a good while.
