LU Gunning for Elon
reporter: Dennis Carter
Tue November 18, 2008

Lynchburg, VA - Saturday's Elon at Liberty game is huge for both teams, the Phoenix and Flames need a win to keep alive playoff chances. Liberty is shooting for a 10th win, which would break the school record and put the Flames 10-and-2 overall.

And there's a matter of pride, too. Last year, Elon embarrassed LU in Burlington 42-14. Danny Rocco called it the Flames' worst game of the season.

i hope we win just because of last year. that was completely embarrassing. we ought to come out mad just because of that, without even considering playoffs. just like the article said, as a matter of pride we should have a chip on our shoulder

...and then will we have all the haters coming out of the closest saying how Coach Rocco needs to go and what a lousy coach he is? I think not.

I truly hope this team dosen't need more ammo for this game.

They Should be ticked from last year's stomp down.
They should be pumped to have a playoff shot.
They should still be mad at the Presby loss.
They should be fired up to prove SOME FANS wrong

LET'S GO FLAMES, BEAT ELON!

Several of my students are sticking around...but the general consensus is that the vast majority of students are on the first ride out of town...in spite of what was announced at convo today.

This is now just a matter of OUR guys coming together and going to war for themselves. I don't care if there isn't anyone else there or 15000 screaming passionate lunatics. This is our best against their best. They both want it. They are both good football teams. OUR guys are champions and have gone through a season with the proverbial bullseye on their backs all year. Yes we stumbled twice, but got right back up. They will need to play their best game in all phases. I expect Elon to do the same. Let the rest of us enjoy the fact that our champions are fighting to take our program, our school to the next level. This is the Unfinished Business that we have talked about for over a year. This is the dream of our founder. This is an opportunity for those who believe in each of these men to bring everything we have to support and encourage them for four quarters and multiple overtimes if needed. I call each of you out to put on your game face, your will, your faith in these special young men .......and lay it all out this Saturday.

I will be watching my son's final regular season game this Saturday. He will start and fight for this team for the 45th time. He got his butt kicked in a 1-10 season. He finally got to touch the trophy on the night they won it this last Sat. He plays with a group that has battled together for a long time. He works for men who he admires and loves. I will always be thankful to God that Coach Wimberly stumbled into Ohio and introduced my son to Liberty University and offered him a chance to be part of something very special..........that as a dad, I want to keep going for a few more games.

Football coaches aren't supposed to be so eloquent ... or right on the money, for that matter. Thanks for putting us back in the right mindset, madmat.

Reading AGS and other national viewpoints, you would think we have nothing but a prayer this Saturday. Thankfully we know the power of those prayers. Our guys can stand up to the Phoenix and beat them man-to-man. I am excited to see Coach Rocco's men give eveeything they have Saturday afternoon on that field. Win or lose, they will be ready for battle. And frankly, you can count me among those who believe we can seize the day!

Madmat, like you, I also have a family member on this team. He is starting his 42nd game. We have watched these guys go from a 10 game losing season to potentially having a 10 win season. This team has a chance to do what no other LU team has been able to do. I'll be there with a crowd to cheer on the Flames. I was at the Elon game last year and watched as our team had no answer for them. I'm sure the coaching staff has a game plan that will be the difference maker in this game and give the Class of '09 a chance to extend there season. GO FLAMES!!!! BEAT ELON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This may be the only football game in North America that could get me to put my boys in the car at 4am Saturday morning, drive 8 hours from Columbus, Ohio and miss the Ohio State v Michigan Game. But there's no place I'd rather be than supporting these young men, and their families, whom I've watched from a distance. I'm looking forward to my 3rd Flames game and my first in Virginia. Now one bit of advice to all Liberty Flames: this is in reality a playoff game....don't tell me how rough the ocean is, just bring the ship in.

By the way, Woody Hayes once said you win with people. I think it applies to you folks and your team.

Go Flames.
Coaching changes

It appears your intel was on the mark.
