Fredericksburg Free Lance-Star wrote:Black-Hawks standout quarterback Brian Hudson and star running back Chase Barnett have been busy this summer, showcasing their skills at several individual camps. The Black-Hawks also attended a team camp at West Virginia University.

However, Hudson has yet to pick up a scholarship offer and Barnett's only offer is from Division I-AA Liberty University.

Black-Hawks head coach Jeff Berry said college coaches are interested in Hudson and Barnett, but he's not sure how much.

Ohio University has shown interest in Hudson, and West Virginia has inquired about the speedy, but diminutive Barnett (5-foot-7, 175 pounds), who rushed for 3,911 yards and 44 touchdowns the past two seasons.

"They really like [Barnett]," Berry said of West Virginia. "They've got a few kids ranked above him right now and they're seeing where those kids are going to end up."

And check out what he did in this big district game last fall ...
Washington Post wrote:"When that rainstorm hit, we all remembered last year," Brooke Point running back Chase Barnett said. "It was lights on for us and lights off for them."

The Black-Hawks forced a fumble on the first play, scored on the ensuing drive and shut out the Panthers in the second half. Brooke Point (6-1) now has sole possession of first place in the Commonwealth District at 4-0. Massaponax (6-1, 3-1) lost its first game of the season.

"I was dead tired, and that rainstorm picked me up," said defensive end Isaiah Hamlette, who has committed to Virginia Tech. "It was just so exciting, all the winds and leaves. It was crazy."

No one was happier to see the rain than Barnett. The junior had rushed for 256 yards in the first half en route to a career-high 377 yards. All night Barnett blasted through holes and spun by and shook off defenders. The rain was just one more advantage for the tailback, who scored four times on runs of 18, 70, 2 and 11 yards and averaged 10 yards per carry.

After the game even Barnett was shocked to hear his total.

"I'm speechless," he said. "That's not like me. I just want to credit my line and coaches for making the right calls."

We lose our top 2 RBs after this year. Our #3 guy is a Jr. It doesn't hurt to look into more RB's. Plus, it's not like we know every single guy they've looked at or contacted. I'm sure they look at numerous guys from every position.

No doubt we need more stud RBs in the pipeline. It was just a funny comment.

Injuries to Star Players Have Shaken Up the Area Football Picture

Here is where it gets interesting including a QB we were chasing once upon a time ...
West Springfield quarterback Bryn Renner, who has committed to North Carolina for both football and baseball, sprained his left shoulder two weeks ago during the Spartans' 52-42 victory over South County. And Friday, Brooke Point running back Chase Barnett, who has rushed for more than 6,000 yards in his career, suffered a dislocated ankle and a fractured fibula in his right leg during a 36-35 win against Massaponax.

Renner will start Friday when West Springfield (5-3, 4-1 Virginia AAA Patriot District) travels to Lake Braddock (4-4, 2-3), but Barnett is lost for the season. Hawkins suffered a high-ankle sprain, and his status for the rest of the year is uncertain.

"There was just a different feel in the stadium," said Brooke Point Coach Jeff Berry, who looked on stunned as Barnett, a four-year starter, was loaded into an ambulance on the field. "Everyone had a panicked look on their faces, from the opposing team to our team."
And check out who the "Eagles" coach is ...
Barnett has one offer -- from Liberty -- and Eagles Coach Danny Rocco called him Friday night to say the school will honor its commitment. Barnett's mother, Cassandra Morris, said her son could be able to play football again in 10 weeks.

When Brooke Point senior running back Chase Barnett was in the hospital after suffering a season-ending dislocated ankle and fractured fibula, he didn't hear from too many schools that were recruiting him.

In fact, just one school's coaching staff called: Liberty University's.

And while other schools showed interest in Barnett, Liberty was the only one that offered a full scholarship.

That's why Barnett recently orally committed to the Flames.

By the way...class act on Rocco's part. Showing that LU was willing to stand behind this kid and honor their committment is a very strong statement about the programs character. I also like the fact that Rocco called the hospital to tell Barnett personaly. A truly classy gesture.

Good on the coaching staff...I think that once he gets his leg better we'll do real well under Coach Gillespie

I watched his highlight tape on myspace and the kid has breakaway speed and shiftiness. I think he will be a good pickup for us. I think its cool that Coach still offered him after all other schools pulled out after his injury.

Can Gillespie stretch him into a 6-footer?

When it comes to running backs, height is not the most important thing. Look at the best running backs of all time...

Barry Sanders - 5'8"
Walter Payton - 5'10"
LaDanian Tomlinson - 5'10"
Emmit Smith - 5'9"
Jerome Bettis - 5'11"
Marshall Faulk - 5'10"
Joe Morris - 5'7"
Maurice Jones-Drew - 5'7"

Short Running Backs have been great for us in recent history...

Samkon Gado was 5'10"
Dre Barnes was 5'7"
Zach Terrell is listed at 6'0" but that is a stretch...
Terron Lawrence is 5'7"

Luke's right...I mean get this guy into our strength program and Im sure he would make a fine running back. Maybe not a power runner like Rashad but definitely somebody that can contribute immediately next year

also, Wes Cheek and Ryan Grieser were RB's at first and now they are big parts of our defense. Maybe if he doesn't work out at RB Rocco will move him to DB...

I love small backs and actually prefer them..as long as we have a big bruiser you can bring in on 3rd down situations RB or FB

Fredericksburg Star wrote:Though Brooke Point can win without Barnett, it cannot celebrate without him.

After last night's game, before the players began bouncing and yelling and smiling, one question was asked over and over.

Where's Chase?

When Barnett eventually hobbled onto the field on crutches and joined his team, the joy rose.

"This is so rewarding," Berry said, his clothes soaked from a post-game ice-water bath. "It's rewarding because I think a lot of people gave up on us."
