Lets assume for the sake of this that you have the authority to do or stop it. (Little petty stuff doesn't count like the fact that they didn't overturn your reps that one time.)
Here's five...

#1. I would curb enrollment. We have waaaay too many students that shouldn't be in college. I know that we do a fine job weeding them out, but these people shouldn't be here in the first place. Our SAT range, when I was in school, was enormous -- 25% of the students scored lower than a 750 and 25% scored higher than a 1150. Those on the bottom rung dropped out, but the fact that they were accepted to Liberty destroys our academic reputation and weighs down the degree of those who actually earned it.

#2. I would end the 'teachers only get one-year contracts' nonsense. I understand that Falwell said if a teacher goes off the deep end and starts teaching blasphemy, we want to get rid of him / her as quickly as possible. However, why not offer a multi-year contract with a clause saying we can get rid of you if your teachings violate our policies?

Take a look at coaches. If we only offered coaches one-year contracts, would they take it? Would you be able to lure top-tier coaches to Liberty if they had no job security? No? Well, why should we expect top-tier professors to do the same?

#3. The Danny Lovett and Rob Jackson era... or 'error', if you will. They were jokes. And don't get me started about Danny's son, Eric.

#4. Ken Karcher. That guy set our football program back a decade.

#5. I would say to Jerry Falwell, "you know that blurb you're about to print in the National Liberty Journal that cites an article saying Tinky Winky from the TeleTubbies is gay? I would re-consider running that blurb. Just a hunch. Whatever good intentions you have will be offset by the fact that you will look like a colossal homophobe. And while I'm at it, let's just say, some time in the future, a bunch of ticked-off Muslims will fly planes into some of our buildings. It might be in your best interests to say 'I don't know why the Lord let it happen, but I know He is in control, no matter what', instead of blaming the ACLU and the gays. Again, just a hunch."

2) I would have changed dress code, music code, hair code, facial hair code, etc. much earlier. I think it held the school back, attendance wise, in the 90's. I think the handwriting was on the wall about things becoming more progressive.

3) I would have stopped Jerry from talking about 9/11 with Pat Robertson. (I would have also stopped him from talking about teletubbies)
Belcher -- I totally didn't see that you had said #3 before I posted it. My fault.

But while I'm at it, I guess #6 for me would be that we never should have changed the dress code. That place should still be shirt and ties, with polos allowed during the spring (I don't have a problem with girls wearing pants year-round... and while I'm at it, that rule would only apply to the classroom, if you're going thru DeMoss at 4:00 to the bookstore, you shouldn't have to dress up.)

what does wearing a shirt and tie accomplish?

i know it significantly cuts back enrollment, but what would it accomplish?

Dress code would've been gone a long time ago.

Would've built the circle the style of the quads. I know we couldn't afford it or whatever back then, but if I could change something, I'd give us the money to afford it.

I just wanted to clarify. I am 100% glad the shirt and tie era is gone, but I think the jeans, flip-flops era is too loose.

That genie is out of the bottle and is not going back in. The change in dress code in no means diminishes the quality of person LU is bringing in.

i'm not sure how i feel about that. definitely no on the ties, but one side of me says the students would look much nicer if they didn't have jeans/flip flops.

the other side says why does it matter what they wear, let them wear something comfortable. it increases numbers and feels good

At the risk of starting one of our played out arguments on here: I never would've transferred here if there was still the shirt and tie rule or I couldn't wear jeans/flip flops.

I will get BBQ'd for this, but our culture is a jean and flip flop culture. We are not a suit and/or tie culture any longer, and haven't been for 20+ years IMO. Fewer and fewer jobs require it (I'm a pastor, and have yet to wear a suit. I haven't even worn a tie). I think Liberty has done a good job at fitting into today's culture. Liberty is picking and choosing the right things to keep in their standards (no drinking/drugs/tobacco, sex, pornography, etc.). Those things ALONE makes them VERY different from secular colleges today. I just don't think wearing a dress or wearing a tie is a fight worth having, and I don't think it makes Liberty any more of a spiritual leader in our society. Personally, I think it makes them look more like a cult in the worlds eyes (I'm not saying they are, just the perception I have heard from non-believers in discussing shirt and tie/dress only environments). I do agree that there needs to be some rules for modesty sake. I also think there should be some rules in regards to those who look counter cultured (goth, emo type people, or just people who are really sloppy in dress and appearance)

Hopefully I didn't open up a can of worms here!

Re: Dress Code

I'm an old hag ('86-90), and I always thought the dress code was over the top. AND I came from a hardcore IFBx church, where we were told that that was the way things were supposed to be. And from about day 10 of my freshman year, I hated (and ignored) the music code. Once I discovered Mylon, White Cross, etc., it was all over. I want my money back for all the fines I got back then.

FWIW, I showed up at Southern Seminary for my first day of class in a golf shirt and khaki pants. Everyone else in the room was in jeans or shorts, T-shirts, and flip flops or sneakers. I figured it was because it was summer modulars, but the dress code was still very casual come fall. Southern is about as conservative as you get and be evangelical rather than Fundamental, and they're still more relaxed than LU. So, even though I don't like the way some of the students look (I've seen some slobs on campus), I figure it's a minor thing, it's a taste thing, and I'll ignore it until someone shows me from Scripture why khaki pants are more Christian/spiritual than Levis. :P

We never even had the shirt & tie rule at Tenn. Temple. Maybe that is one dress code rule LU borrowed from BJU.

you can't just call people a joke and not say why, what made RJ and DL such a joke? and i am not even going to ask about eric because i think that people sin, and no one is perfect..and no one deserves to be slammed on a message board for falling.

Previous Threads have gone on about those people.

It may be better to look them up than to hash them out again

okay i re read the "rob jackson" thread, and i found Ed's reasoning for not liking rob jackson...

rob came and sat behind dr falwell at a basketball game, and waved to someone (ed says no one was even looking at rob for rob to be waving to..) rob apparently sat there for abut 15 minutes, got up, waved (again at apparently no one) and walked away.

WOW. we go really far to find reasons we dont like people dont we? its not as if the vines center isnt a REALLY large place...and you really dont like him becuase you didnt happen to see whoever it was that he was waving at? gotcha. makes PERFECT sense.

I understand (only after reading it on FF) that people had some run in's with Rob...I personally never have and hold him in the highest regard and is one of my favorite people. EVEN if you dont like him there is no way you can mention them in the same sentence...

In fact one of the things I was going to post earlier was the renaming whatever it was to Danny Lovett School of....but after looking on the internet I couldnt find it anymore so maybe the changed it back?

HMO, your thinking of the Lovett Center for Ministry Training, a part of the Seminary.

But when I looked at it just now, it has been changed. Im positive that even just two weeks ago it was still the Lovett Center for Ministry Training, but now its just the Center for Ministry Training.

If I ever get big time enough to where something at LU gets name after me, I'll be sure not to get excited. I guess if you want your name to stick, you've got to pay for it.

You dont have to hold back on my account...I knew him and liked him...thats my experience, I'm sure there are those on here that have had different relationships....just bc you or someone else may have had a bad encounter with him wont change my respect with how he treated me throughout the years just like all the good things I may say cant change the damage that may have been done in your case

I just listened, i dont' think ive ever spoken with the man. At basketball games some his mumblings were quite funny, but i dont' think everyone appreciated them if you know what i mean. These are just a few examples.

After an LU basketball loss ( i had no idea he was so passionate lol) i watched him approach the refs locker room and scream at the door some funny inappropriate comments and i think he punched a door. Did i care about this....no, but there were other Liberty and non-liberty people standing around as well. His edit button didn't work so well on occasion as ive heard other stories.

He also brought it upon himself in wed. night service to call out people( and im talking 50-100) who only came to the "worship" music part and not hear him speak.....that didn't sit well with quite a bit of the student body. I mean even Lovett laughed when people brought umbrellas to sit in the first row cause he spit everywhere......

Define "inappropriate"...because i am quite sure that he wouldn't have said anything inappropriate. I know for a fact, that Rob Jackson thinks "crap" "sucks" and "darn" are inappropriate, so i would love to know what he said that was inappropriate. He is one of the most passionate people EVER at sporting events. You could DEFINITELY hear him tell the refs that they were blind, terrible, getting paid, or that he could do a better job....just like any LUnatic, or fan in general would do..i hardly think that is inappropriate..as for punching the door.."I think" isn't a good way to start a sentence when telling people reasons you don't like someone. "you think" he punched a door....i think he didn't.

Lovett laughed when people brought umbrellas, just like rob laughed when people made fun of his "thank you may be seated" or "with a show of hands.." Not listening to someone speak and walking out in the middle of a service after worship is a whole different story. especially if its 100 people getting up to walk out after worship..i never knew this happened, but i would think that Rob's heart was probably in the right place by wanting students to have some TEACHING at CHURCH and not just come to sing and leave.

its amazing how petty some people are at picking people apart. I feel bad for people in higher positions that get dogged on a message board just for simple things like you mentioned.

ok. rant over.
