Lynchburg, VA - Liberty Flames coach Danny Rocco expects this week's opponent, 4-and-1 Lafayette, to be the best team the Flames have faced so far. The Flames are 6-and-0 and coming off their first shutout of the season, Saturday's 33-0 blanking of Stony Brook. The Leopards have done something the Flames have never done. Lafayette has advanced to the playoffs three of the last four years.

Danny Rocco, Liberty Flames Head Coach - "Their defense is ranked number one in the country in scoring defense. They just don't give up very many easy plays and they make it hard for you to move the ball and score points."

The Big South Conference has only six members for football – Liberty, Coastal Carolina, Gardner-Webb, Charleston Southern, Stony Brook and VMI – and it does not receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (formerly Division I-AA) postseason tournament.

So, in order to get the attention of the tournament committee, a Big South team must make lots of noise on the field.

“As I told our kids, they don’t just want to beat us; they want to beat us by 40 or 50 points so that in the event we would be in the Patriot League hunt and in a situation where we could get a No. 2 (invitation), they would be screaming for an at-large berth,” Lafayette Coach Frank Tavani said Tuesday.

Danny Rocco’s buzzwords for Liberty’s game against Stony Book last week were hunger and humility.
He’ll have the same message for his team this week when it suits up against Lafayette at Williams Stadium. Actually, the words could be played on repeat for every week for the rest of the season.
The reality for the Flames is simple. Any loss of focus could be disastrous for Liberty. A loss before the season finale against Elon will eliminate Liberty from any FCS playoff conversation. Liberty’s out of conference schedule continues to take a beating, as the Flames’ two Division I opponents — Youngstown State and Western Carolina — are now a combined 4-10.

Lafayette (4-1) at No. 14 Liberty (6-0), 3:30 p.m.

The inaugural meeting between Liberty and Lafayette will be an important one, as both the Flames and the Mountain Hawks try to position themselves for the postseason with a rare mid season out-of-conference battle.

For Liberty, a win over Lafayette would further strengthen a playoff resume for a Flame team whose league (the Big South) doesn't have the luxury of having an automatic bid.

That guy needs to be fired, ASAP.

The Mountain Hawks are from Lehigh University, Lafayette's rival

oh, gotcha. i thought maybe it was some kind of regional slang for a Leopard. ya know, like some ppl call a groundhog a gopher or a whistle pig. but i just couldn't figure out how a Leopard could be a Mountain Hawk. maybe the poor guy just had a senior moment.

i do bet that the Lafayette Leopards will LOVE being called Mountain Hawks, though. hehe

Under head coach Frank Tavani, the Leopards are 0-27 when allowing 30 or more points to an opponent.

THis lends itself well to what I said about LU scoring 30 or more points in 5 of 6 wins this year and 15 of 17 games the last two years (the only two losses when scoring 30 or more were to W&M and Toledo, both last year)

I tend to type fairly quick and when I do "teh" is one of the things that always comes out. I try to fix them when I see them though.

Here's the best of DC tonight ...
Liberty's 11-game winning streak dating back to last season is the longest in the nation and the longest in school history. Danny Rocco, Third-year Liberty Flames Coach - "We do talk about it. It is something that our guys are certainly aware of, you know we're in the middle of something really special, you know maybe something that could be extraordinary. So can we keep it up?"

lol thanks...anyway I think if we can get off to the start like we did against Stony Brook this one might be over early...as I said before LU has scored 30 or more in 15 of the last 17.

Now here is an interesting little trivia question...When was the last time LU scored at least 30 points in a game AT HOME and lost? (Hint: Youre gonna have to go into the ol wayback machine for this one)
