Dude, come one, seriously. Adult conversations trying to take place here.

They did say on the radio this morning that the Obama campaign did call the school, the school told them their price, and they never called back. Private property is private property, and there are still businesses trying to make money in the Plaza. I guess this empty visit is more important than Lynchburg's economy for some people.
i find this comment very entertaining since you were the one yesterday complaining about people getting upset over stupid things....

he wasn't trying to start something...and I do agree...Lynchburg does need a civic center...and there are many within Liberty that feel the same..

but seriously...thanks for the laugh.....the irony

A civic center for what? The city has discussed this ad nauseum. It wouldn't be used unless there was an agreement that LU uses it.

Just to clarify, do you laugh at things in your head or do you laugh at the things in your head?

Both. Many times simultaneously in conjuction with one another at the same time together.

Ever heard of the Salem Civic Center? It serves a vast number of purposes and a lot of them don't even have a connection with Roanoke College (which is located in Salem).

http://www.salemciviccenter.com/calenda ... ocationID= theres a calendar of events just for august. it's in use 22 out of 31 days in august alone. in july there were only 5 open days. it slows down some during the school year, but a civic center in Lynchburg would be a great place to attract bands and other types of entertainment that either can't or won't perform at LU or LC.

Obama is now in Petersburg, and is eating in a restaurant right across the street from my mother-in-law’s.

Did you look at the events on that calander? It's 50% Kiwanis and Rotary Club meetings. And the other stuff is the Avalanche. Which we don't have. The first concert I see is in November. Jason Aldean. I have no idea who that is.

We have the Avalanche...the Hillcats...but we already use LU for anything taking place outside of our stadium :D

I saw Kanye at the Salem Civic Center....I'd support us getting a civic center if we can land him!

Kanye was at the Salem Civic Center? That's a bit small for him I would think, I would have thought the Roanoke Civic Center would have been a more suitable venue...

Regarding the parking.

When I lived in Johnstown, PA, I liked to go to the Johnstown Chiefs ECHL hockey games at the War Memorial in downtown Johnstown. Across the street from the War Memorial is a Food Lion. Their parking lot is never full.

However, on game days...they put up a gate, and you have to show a receipt to get out...or pay $5.

There's a church near the highschool football field where I live now...and on homegame nights, they charge $5 for parking, and give it all to missions.

I think people have a right to protect their parking area.

18 wheelers use our church parkinglot as a turnaround, and to adjust things on their trucks...you can see the damage that it does to the one parking lot that they use, verses the second parking lot that is just cars.

The silly thing is...they could have had this event at the Vines center and accommodated a lot more people...but evidentally the Obama people felt that they didn't want to pay the $.

It was just a week after "Through the Wire" came out so he was still pretty unknown and John Legend sang a song and nobody had a clue who he was...he didnt even sell that out at the time...then just a few months ago I went and saw him to a sold out Nissan Pavilion...he put on a better show at the Salem Civic center though

back to topic...how do you guys feel about LU not letting people park at the Plaza and having to get bussed over from City Stadium?

I personally dont care either way and can see the arguments from both sides....from what I hear LU was never asked though so theres really no reason for them to say much anyways...although I see it's created a little buzz

I think not letting them park at the Plaza is hilarious...sort of childish if you think about it, but hilarious.

Here is a followup in the fishwrap .... and you absolutely must read the comments. They are a riot.
NewsAdvance wrote:LU defends decision to close Plaza

Liberty University is standing by its decision to deny parking for Wednesday night’s Obama event, a move that’s drawing criticism from local Democrats.

City officials, meanwhile, are looking to Sen. Barack Obama’s campaign to pay for a last-minute shuttle service established to get attendants from City Stadium to the rally at E.C. Glass High School.

The city stepped in after learning Wednesday morning LU would not allow event parking at The Plaza shopping center.

On Thursday, Liberty officials said they did make an offer to supply the Obama campaign with paid — not free — parking at the shopping center, which is owned by the university.

No reply was received, according to administrators.

Keep doubting if JJ is brilliant or not:
LU, a registered 501(c)(3), said its tax-exempt status prohibits it from providing free parking to a political rally. Federal law bars exempt groups from contributing to political campaigns either directly or indirectly, according to the Internal Revenue Service’s Web site.

BRAVO! (even though really we could have given them parking for 10 cents this makes us look a lot better in the general public's eyes)

I love how the comments people think they know more about what the school can and can't do than the chancellor of the school. You know the guy with the law degree.

This was a no win situation for LU. Do nothing and upset the right wing, protest abortion at a random high school just for kicks crowd. Close it down and upset the left. I think charging for parking was a good idea for compromise and I will add that here in Tuscaloosa the local mall charges $ for parking on UA game days and then $ for a shuttle service to Bryant-Denny. The local high school a few blocks from the stadium charges $ for parking in its lot also. I don't think this would have been an issue at all in any other town in America or at any other University. LU just attracts this sort of attention because of our past faux pauxs in the community going back many years. It has been a while and it has seemed from afar like realtions with the city folk has gotten better but I have to confess when I saw the first mention in the N&A about this event I immediately thought about the history of folks using The Plaza for EC Glass events and expected (but hoped I was wrong) that something like this would happen.

Jerry, Jr did a good job of framing the issue though and I think that most rational folks can see that this was a tough call for LU and hopefully it won't set back community relations with the majority. The fault here was with the Obama staffers who assumed that a private mall/business would simply say sure use our property for something that will offer us no benefit.

This will blow over quick imo...

I submitted the link to this story to drudge. I wonder if he puts up a link to it seeing how influential I am. ;) I bet he would have liked it but it's a day old. I don't know if he'd put up an article that's a day old.

Two lines from the second N&A story about the parking that I find amusing...

The Obama camp may still end up paying for at least a portion of last night’s parking costs.

The city intends to send them a bill for a shuttle service it quickly established after learning there would be no Plaza parking.
Payne said while the campaign has not expressly agreed to pay, he expected it would.

“I’m assuming they’re honorable people,” he said.
