..WOW look what I found guys..I guess comparing UVA to LU is a bit like apples and oranges..but man did he have to say it like that..

Vince played at the University of Virginia and looks like an outside linebacker in a 3-4 system, kind of a cross between a defensive end and a pure outside linebacker," said coach Bill Belichick. "He played well at Liberty. He's a strong kid and runs well for his size and he's a smart kid and he has played at a high level of competition at Virginia, even though he transferred to Liberty."

It's I-AA Big South football with a couple of low level patsies added...what would you expect him to say? It's going to take a couple of more years for LU football to really get the respect from the pro coaches that it deserves.

If I were Bilicheat, I'd be less worried about what competition he played and more worried about what kind of moral and ethical standards he may have developed while he was here.

All he was saying was that Redd had played at a high level of competition, i.e. a rather large recongnized Division 1A Program, before transferring to relatively-unknown-outside-of-the-Midatlantic/Southeast Division 1AA Liberty, ergo lower level of competition. I don't read that as a slight, just a clarification for those who may be burning up the blogs trying to figure out where this guy came from. Not a lot of people know the name Liberty in New England.

However, you could go on many NFL teams blogs and find them trying to figure out why their team drafted or signed guys from the supposed "lesser" division. "Them's" the facts of how it is in many folks minds.

No slight to LU and he actually complimented Redd for being intelligent and for playing well at Liberty. Redd does have a nice advantage coming out of LU, though, in that the Pats utilize the 3-4 scheme as does Rocco.

One more sidenote: The Reiss article above also states in the next question that if he had to choose one (to date) to make the team and one to make the practice squad, it's Guyton at 53 and Redd at 54. The PFW guys also vacillate on who makes the team and who goes to the practice squad between the new linebackers. Of course, if they carry 10 linebackers that makes it easier for Redd to make the 53 based on what some of the bloggers are saying. I hope to see Redd do some more good things against the Eagles this weekend to cement his spot.

It seems from your reports of training camp that there have been a few interesting surprises in terms of who might make the team and where certain players will be. Certainly injuries will play a part, but right now, what are a few of your top surprises for positional and roster battles that you didn't see coming heading into training camp?

A: I’d start with the linebackers, Jason. I expected more out of veteran Victor Hobson and now I wouldn’t be surprised if he doesn’t make the club. Rookie free agents Gary Guyton and Vince Redd have also caught my eye at linebacker, and – while it’s still early – I’d put them on the 53-man roster at this time (Guyton before Redd if only able to choose one).

I believe he was referencing the players in Pats camp coming out of 4-3 schools.

According to the box, Vince had one solo tackle last night.

Not that he knows what he's talking about, but it's nice to hear anyway. Go Vince!
Linebacker (9): They have 12 linebackers on the roster. There is a lot of youth here and a lot of potential, led by first-round pick Jerod Mayo, who figures to open the season as a starter at inside linebacker, and outside linebacker Shawn Crable. The surprise could be that both veteran special teamer Larry Izzo and former Jets linebacker Victor Hobson, who has struggled to make the transition to 3-4 inside linebacker, get whacked in favor of undrafted rookies Vince Redd and Gary Guyton, who may be difficult to stash on the practice squad. Best guess: Tedy Bruschi, Mayo, Adalius Thomas, Mike Vrabel, Crable, Pierre Woods, Eric Alexander, Guyton, and Redd.

It would be a huge boost for his future if he makes it. And if someone like Izzo gets cut to make room, WOW! Now yes I do realize Izzo is like 95 but he has quite a resume!

Honestly, it doesn't matter if he makes the team. He's not gonna stay on the practice squad.

If Vince doesn't make it with the Patriots which I really hope and think he will...other nfl teams are chomping at the bit for him he could probaly get a lot of PT fairly soon on several NFL teams right now looking at some of these defenses

Izzo is widely regarded as one of the top ST players in the league. He isn't going anywhere.

For those who are on the bubble, such as linebacker Vince Redd, cornerback Jeff Shoate and receiver C.J. Jones, or even those who think they’re on the bubble, they may view tonight’s game against the Giants as their last chance. A good performance in New York could mean they still have a job Saturday night.
