Officals seek solution for traffic concerns near planned LU tunnel

By Alicia Petska
Published: July 15, 2008

Local and state officials are reviewing the safety ramifications of Liberty University’s planned vehicular tunnel in response to concerns from neighboring Central Virginia Community College.

CVCC objected to its lack of involvement in the project during a public hearing last month. Officials cited the influx of through traffic the tunnel would create, and the new safety considerations that would mean for the college.

The school, which at no point objected to the tunnel itself, has since met with the city, LU and the Virginia Department of Transportation to brainstorm solutions. The group agreed to postpone further talks until a traffic study could be performed when college classes reconvene in August.

“So far, we’re progressing nicely,” John Poole, CVCC’s vice president of finance and administration, said Tuesday. “I think we’re taking the right steps and have the time to make this work.”

battling is a bit harsh...sounds like you are trying to sell newspapers with that headline...haha

anyways, there is nothing wrong with taking the right steps to make sure this thing is done right...too many times things are built in lynchburg and the traffic that goes with it isn't considered...the tunnel will happen and when it does I would hope we would all want it done right...this kind of thing will only help that...

I'm sure that if the powers that be would widen Harvard St., CVCC's complaints would disappear. Harvard gets pretty backed up during school, and if you add traffic opposite, it makes one wonder how many light cycles one who is turning left would have to sit through on Harvard.
I'm sure that this will all be worked out easily.

Sly delving in to sensationalistic "journalism" by making it sound worse than it is. It says so in the article that they have no tried to oppose it.

Yep...there seems to be enough room to add an additional right turn lane which will allow for two left turn lanes.

If they do it like the other lights where it' a protected left turn every time, it shouldn't be a problem.

its not LU's fault that the city sucks at making traffic patterns. they should hire some outside consultants to come in and provide some ideas on fixing the mess they've created

I would second that. How about a peoplemover (monorail) that shadows Harvard and goes over Wards from campus? Wonder if its ever been considered?

That idea needs to be thrown in the fiery furnace.
