I think LJ was one of the greatest players to ever put on a Liberty Uniform. It is difficult to assess pure shooters and I don't even remember my list. Ask me 10 different times and I might have 10 different responses because it is so close. The only shoe in on this list in my mind is Jay Boykin. Can't have a list without him on it. Everything else is subject to change depending on the day. Can't speak about the 4 year hole in my LU history that is the Hankinson era. I was not a big part of the program and was not exactly embraced by that staff. I did get to know Sneed and Caldwell and Ward a little during that time but that is about it. Caldwell is a great scorer but I don't know if I would call him a pure shooter because he does so many other things well. Good discussion though. 47/1/2 or whatever your name was, sign up and hit me with your true ID. I know we know each other

I think Tyler is gonna be a great player but we have to remember that these guys are young men and we should be careful not to puff someone up before they do anything worth talking about. At Liberty over the years I have seen so many guys hyped up before they play a down or take the court only to never live up to the often unrealistic expectations. Now I think Tyler has a chance to be special but no one knows until he takes the floor. What you do in practice or scrimmages or even exhibition games don't mean anything. It is what you do when it counts. I don't like to put added pressure on guys because I know these guys read this stuff. Just a few years back we all couldn't wait for Doug Stewart to take the floor. Now people are killing him even though he is still one of my favorite all-time Liberty players because I got to know him as a person and he is a terrific kid for sure with a bright future. For the record I think he is an exceptional basketball talent but the pressure and demands of division 1 basketball can get to the best of us. Those that played this game at this level or above know what I am talking about. Doug didn't work out here at Liberty but in my opinion is still a good basketball player. He was asked to do things that he was not comfortable doing due to personel issues. I don't think he ever imagined playing power forward let alone center but coach had to use him that way. I think Baker will be fine but lets get him on the court healthy and dropping bombs on the Big South and other opponents before we crown him the next Boykin (or you can insert your great player here. And don't be shy about a certain player that wore #20 in his day. Not talking about Matt Hildebrand either  )

i agreee with you 100% scar. damien hubburd was a big dissapointment for us this year. if he can only finish layups. but now that he has a position change and the weight is off his shoulders to fill dees' shoes, maybe things will be different. hopefully

I agree SCAR. It may just be me, and it probably is, but i have never seen soooo many players hyped before they even lace em up!! Or before they even sign a letter of intent!! (Old folks will remember the "We are gonna get Chris Webber" days) then here at LU. I am not sure why that is. Never experienced it anywhere else, to this degree. Its been said before and it should continue to BE said that evaluating incoming talent at this time of year is meaningless. Everyone can be a "drive way"/open gym All American (I still have MY plaque) What you CAN probably extrapolate is that A) We needed some big bodies underneath B) Shooter and it LOOKS like these were addresssed.

I just found this fan forum so i am gonna catch up with all the postings ...

My top 5 would have to be ...

1.Larry Jackson
2.Matt Hildebrand
3.Karl Hess
4.Jay Boykin
5.CJ Cowgil

Larry was the best shooter we have had, Matt led them to the NCAA, Karl is the all-time leading scorer, Jay beat UVA with a clutch 3, and though CJ never got to play much but anyone who saw him shoot would have him on this list. (one a side note, Sharon Wilkerson was a much better shooter than Sarah)

I disagree. Sharon was a better SCORER (ON THE COURT!!!) she could shoot but also penetrate and create her own openings but Sarah was a better shooter.

I agree with Brokeback. Sara could stroke it from outside but looked to pass more (no dirty jokes guys ) As far as anyone assessing shooters back to Karl Hess, that is wild stuff. I would say that Greg McCauley and Mike Minnet need to be considered as well. I saw those guys play but I never saw Hess. Just because he scored 2500 points doesn't necessarily mean he was a great shooter. My backcourt mate Bailey Alston scored 2100 in only 3 seasons but he was probably the worst shooter of any guard on our team in any of those years. Hildo, Boykin and probably Jackson would make almost everyone's list though. Leary was a great shooter and had the most range but he started his freshman year and got put in the proverbial dog house and never really emerged. He learned from Pistol Pete Maravich himself. Steph taught me more about shooting than any other person in this world I would say.

alright alright. Let's get our minds out of the gutter. That's been going on way too much lately. Anyway, when I think of Hess playing ball the only thing that comes to mind is a black and white film with all of the white guys and their black shoes, black shorts and white jerseys running around making layups off of their big white backboards. But in reality is was less than 30 years ago so that's just my imagination.

Luconn, the imagery you just described has me cracking up. Yes it does seem like the only footage of Hess would be like George Mikan and Bob Cousy days when cousy would dribble in a figure 8 but never touch the ball with his left hand  How did they play in those sneakers back then without blowing out a knee or an ankle?

Yeah Reebs, Steph was one of Pistol's protege's. In fact when the Pistol died of a sudden heart attack at the young age of 44 (his jersey number), there was media calling our room including James Dobson from focus on the Family. Steph took his death very hard. But yes Steph was a great shooter for sure. Reebs, if folks would have seen what you did to those guys in practice, they might have you on their list!

Scar --- You need to have Steph find a minute or two to drop by here and give us a report on how things are going at PBA. He'll always be a Flame and I know many of us are genuinely interested in what he is doing. That we he could also defend his shooting skeels at the same time.

I will have to get Steph on here at some point. We talk sometimes. I will see what I can do. He can tell you all about his relation ship with #44.

That's really interesting... Pete Maravich was far and away the bball player I most wanted to play like as a kid. His instructional videos and "Pistol: the birth of a legend" (anybody seen that one?) were watched so often that I had them memorized!

As an real, bonafide old hag I was glad to see Karl Hess on a couple of lists. He was a great pure shooter. I played more than a few pickup games with him while at Liberty and he was money with his jump shot.
