The race for America's next president is heating up in our area. You've already seen the ads on television and Saturday you may have even gotten a knock at the door. Supporters of democrat Barack Obama (web|news|bio) canvassed Lynchburg neighborhoods Saturday morning. They were making sure people were registered to vote and spreading the word about their candidate. Republican presidential candidates have gotten used to winning Virginia, because a Democrat hasn't won since 1964. But these supporters say Obama may have a chance. Republican presidential candidates have gotten used to winning in Virginia and among evangelical Christians. But many experts say Virginia is very much in play and Obama is working hard to make inroads with the faith community. Now there's a group of Liberty University (web) students supporting Obama. The group's leader says it's been an uphill battle. In this conservative stronghold, you find Michelle Miller. She's the head of LU Students for Barack Obama.

I had my facebook picture for a while as a picture of Obama with a crown, and underneat it said "Liar." One of the guys from that group sent me a few messages about it, I'll paste some of them for your entertainment:

Well get back to me if you want to - I'm a republican by default but since McCain has been "and in other news" since he won the primary I've been watching the Dem's pretty closely and I've decided to support Obama. But I'm interested to know why you're anti-Obama and who you support now.

I don't know a whole lot about socailism and communism vs. capitalism - in fact, not much more than what I learned from Mrs. Ferdon in my required govt class... I was taught that socialism was basically an early stage to totalitarianism and that it was developed as a reaction to the rise of modern industrial capitalism. In my opinion a socialist economy is not possible at all because it would require the loss of wealth of the general population and in my opinion Americans would never give up their accumulated wealth. So unless I'm just ignorant or I've been looking in the wrong places I don't see how Obama is a socialist, why he would be, or how that would benefit him in running for president. I mean socialism at its core is completely un-American.

I'm a little more than halfway through "Audacity of Hope" and if he believes half of what he writes I think he'll make for a great president.

Back to the picture; all politicians, at least most of the successful ones have been involved in their fair share of controversy (I mean, one episode of fox's 24 and you wonder how a president could ever avoid it lol), but I don't see how that would make him the king of liars anymore than my presence in a bar would make me the king of alcoholics. See what I'm trying to say? Sure, there's loopholes to that analogy but I've read things by Politifact that call Obama a liar and their evidence is faulty at best. My major problem is the Rev Wright controversy and I wish there was some proof that he wasnt there most of those sermons. I mean, to sit under those teachings for twenty years is awful. However, I think a lot of politicians including our dearly beloved G.W. use religion as a PR stunt. I mean, 95% of Americans believe there is a God so claiming to be an atheist wouldn't get you very far. I think claiming to be a member of a church is helpful for them, Obama just happened to pick a lame-o church lol - But I think he prolly didn't frequent their very much. I'm not saying he's not a man of faith, i do believe that he is but I'm sure I'd disagree with him on a lot of non-fundamentals.

I just don't think you can say he's a liar without any kind of proof. Maybe he's contradicted himself but I don't think he knowingly mislead the public.

My only commentary on that guy is apparently he never learned how to think for himself and make his own decisions politically or otherwise (probably had his mom and/or dad do all his thinking for him).

As for Mrs. Miller, I actually got a chance to meet her at the Celebrate America event at Williams Stadium. She's a pretty cool person (the whole Obama thing notwithstanding).

these people are morons....i generally stay out of political discussions because i offer up too much common sense for most peoplle.

i live in illinois. barack has done nothing for this state. we have more plants closing than perhaps any other state in the union. none of the things he said he was going to do have been done. his ties to criminal's here mean that he is either a crook himself or he's too naive to be the president of the united states.
