I wanted to get my "elders" opinion on the best credit card for rewards. This will be paid off monthly so the APR does not bother me to much. I'm mostly interested in "points" rather than just miles since I could use them for gift cards as well as miles....but if the best deal is with miles then miles it is!

I don't know your intentions, but these days a gas card is great. You get rewards on gas, which you have to buy, and with the price of gas it's needed.

Its an interesting conundrum. With airfares soaring the miles are becoming even more valuable. But it is true that dropping points for gift cards has its immediate advantage.

Believe it or not I am using a points card sparingly. We've been debt-free (save our mortgage which is ridiculously low) for about 6 years and we hate putting anything on credit. But it only makes sense for large purchases to take advantage of the points/miles and then pay it off at the end of the month.

my BB&T card has a good rewards program (which I guess is relative to what other rewards programs you are familiar with). It's not quite as good as the amazon.com card my brother has which gives you a $25 amazon gift card for a certain amount of dollars credited, but the BB&T one gives you the same thing but with a lot more flexibility in how you can spend the points. You don't rack up the points as fast on the BB&T one, but you also aren't exclusively stuck with an amazon card...

I was pleased with my USAIR VISA, when I had it. I used to handle all the MBB travel at UNCA, and would charge meals, hotels, etc with that card, then pay it off monthly.

My name is A-Train, and I am addicted to coffee, but in the words of Amy Winehouse:
"They try to make me go to rehab but I say no no no"

And then this great quote: "Rehab is for quitters"

Anyway, I love my Starbucks Visa.

Yeah I got have the American Express Blue and Capital One No Hassle Ultra For Professionals...still trying to figure out which one would be the best to activate

the good thing about the Capital One Ultra is you get 2 miles for every dollar when its generally 1 for 1 so right now I'm leaning towards that....but I still want to hear opinions

American Express Blue is like a regular credit card where you can carry a balance from month to month. The green, gold, and black cards need to be paid each month or you are not able to make new charges. I am not sure of the exact differences in the rewards offers of the different Amex cards, but I believe they vary by the type of card that you carry. Merchants pay a higher percentage to accept American Express and they in turn offer "privileges" to the card members. I use credit cards for every possible business expense and the only reason that it goes on one of the other cards is if the business does not accept American Express, which is rare if you make your purchases in the US. I will probably be an Amex card holder for life.

discover open road is a good gas card, i have it. 5% cash back on gas purchases. i get $20 credit on my account about every 3 months, but i don't travel a whole lot.

i think its chase has the one where you get 3% back and choose what categories. that is a good rewards program too.
