Marshall's built a program that has exceeded the success of CofC's run. I just don't see him leaving for a step down, even if a possible small pay raise (not sure how much they pay but probably not much more).

According to the CCU board, a Charleston television station is reporting that Buzz is taking the job. Talk about your odd timing for this to go down.

In order for Marshall to take it they would likely need to pay him $350-$400 K and 5 shiny suits a year. To get Buzz they just need to pay 10% over Coastal and not mind that he sends out resumes the week he takes over.

Here is the College of Charleston message board:

CofC Fans

It appears to basically be a done deal. The folks in Conway have to feel bamboozled.

all smack aside- that ain't right. I'd love for us to romp on CCU and WU in hoops, but you don't like to see programs take a hit like that- these kids deserved better.

I have to agree with Realist on this one. It is a case of perception vs Reality and reality says that the Big South has been beating the SOCon on the floor in basketball for a few years now and the conference is definitely higher in the RPI rankings. Libertine is right about the arenas being a little nicer in the socon in general but I perceive this as a lateral move that Marshall would not take knowing how good he has it at Winthrop. C of C was a great job in the early to mid 90's and Gregg cut his teeth there but he should hold out for better IMHO. Buzz leaving the Big South is a blow to the conference. I was hoping he would stay a while longer but he shops for jobs harder than Larry Brown!

still a lot of uncertainty on the CCU board- not a good situation over there though. I bet the team is reeling as well.

Seriously. What a putz Buzz is. I can't imagine being recruited by some guy that makes all kinds of promises to me and my family and I put my trust in him to join his program and he jumps ship after 1 season. Seeing what TN did 1 year removed from this guy, should tell you something about how his players must play for him.

Yeah, bailing ship after one year is pretty, well, high class if you know what I mean. I think it will catch up to him though. I don't think he's ever going to be considered for another job after this one. But, nothing has happened yet. Although I would think he would come out and refute the claims if he really were not considering it.

As for Marshall, it can simply come to down to pay, throwing out the other arguements on here. I didn't know that he made over 200G, and CofC was paying Herrion 150. My guess is that CofC won't be able to pay over 150 or at least much more, with the whole buyout of Herrion's contract as well. Buzz makes 100, so he would be getting a pay bump.

Starting to look like a done deal. TV in myrtle reporting Buzz and CofC nearing a deal.

I hope it doesnt work. Just because his players are watching this whole thing go down. That'd be an entertaining season to watch.

Yeah it does seem like he gets good mileage out of the press even when the rumors aren't true.

You guys are right on about the pay thing with Marshall, makes to much at the WU and last time it was open he didn't think it was a better job than the WU, so it definitely isn't a better job now. As for Buzz, he would take it because he likes the SoCon and C of C is a mid-major with tradition, plus a pay raise... And remember he was offered the Furman job and really came close to taking it. He doesn't like raising his family in Myrtle Beach... So who gets the CCU job, this late in summer it will be interesting.

I think with Buzz leaving and BSC dropping out LU should shoot up in the standings.

I'd rather LU shoot up because of what they do.

It will be interesting to see who CCU brings in. There are a few former assistant coaches in the Big South that would take that job like Sean Woods. He was at HPU for a while but is a head coach (can't remember where) now. Don Burgess is due for a chance. He played at Radford and coached as an assistant at Radford, Coastal, VMI and now is at HPU so he knows the Big South well. He is one of the top 20 scorers all time in the Big South I believe despite playing with Doug Day who I believe may have made more 3's than many teams have taken in a 4 year period! He was on rapid fire for 4 years in the early 90's. Former Radford Head coach Ron Bradley is now at Clemson. I wonder if he would consider a return to the Big South. Former Liberty Head coach Jeff Meyer of course is at IU and I know he probably would like to be a head coach again someday soon but this would not be a good fit IMHO. He can hold out for a couple of years and probably get the Butler job or Ball St or some other mid major around his home state of Indiana. CCU will probably try to go with a big name though or at least an established coach at the division 1 level. There is something to be said on taking a chance on a young coach though. It has worked out well for WU and pretty decent for HPU with Bart Lundy.

If Duane Reboul wants to keep coaching at the Division I level, then he'd be an interesting choice too...especially since he doesn't have a team to coach this season.

I can't see them going with a big name. They just got burned doing that exact thing.

Good point LUconn. That is always a risk when you go after someone like that. Duane Reboul has only coached at this level for a few years. I don't know if that is the driving force behind his coaching career. He does however, if I can speak for him, love coaching and not having a team this year to coach and being in an athletic program with an uncertain future could precipitate a move to a school like Coastal. This may get very interesting really soon!

CCU's guys dug this one up.

Can this guy not go ONE season w/out stirring the pot?

maybe he didn't- just rumor/innuendo

or maybe his name is on a master list somewhere.

Other possible candidates to replace Terry Carroll- dismissed March 2 after an extended and unexplained leave of absence - include Coastal Carolina University coach Buzz Peterson...

Denver is a growing program but still ... I can't see that as a step up from CCU. Buzz has some seriously happy feet.
