LU land conservation wins OK from planners

The Lynchburg Planning Commission recommended approval Wednesday of a small rezoning related to the Crossroads Colonnade project.

Commissioners voted 5-0 with two absences to convert 3.6 acres of land to conservation status. The rezoning was offered by Liberty University to fulfill a proffer made last year as part of the plans for Crossroads Colonnade, an LU-adjacent retail development.

Liberty, which owns the future shopping center site, promised at the time to replace 3.6 acres of conservation property that will be lost during construction.

Commissioners said Wednesday they were glad to see that deal honored and appreciated the replacement land was near waterways.

The rezoning is split between two properties, one on Carroll Avenue by Fishing Creek and the other on an island in the James River.

How do you wash away a whole island? I thought just the buildings were washed away.

well since LU will own the crossroads colonnade thing, hopefully they won't allow stores that advertise blatant garbage and filth (think A&F) to operate.

i think the flood washed out the bridge, but I'm pretty sure there are some buildings left, maybe not all of them though, you just have to have a canoe to get to it. i am planning on going down there sometime this summer.

How do you get to Treasure Island? I remember heading toward downtown and turning left at some light, but that was about 35 yrs ago. I would like to see the island next time I am in Lynchburg
