I see him at DE in the NFL too. My point was - that if Robertson comes in from VT as a DE, maybe Rocco will use him the same way.
Did you go to last years W&M game? That was the first game that I remember him playing a true LB position where he was never down on line during game and they picked him apart. Rocco started to use him more as a pass rusher after that game, even starting in the down position on snaps - not many true LB's do that.
Just because I had access to it, I wanted to check and see how much Vince played LB and how much he played DE. I picked two games, Coastal & Toledo. Coastal was a pass-first team and Toledo was more 50/50.
Against Coastal, Vince played 64 plays on defense. Of those 64 plays, 55 of them were from the LB position. Even in the goal line, Vince played LB. The only plays he played DE were in the nickel and dime. That comes out to 85.9% from the linebacker position.
Against Toledo, Vince played 84 plays on defense. Of those 84 plays, 72 were from the LB position. Even in the goal line, Vince played LB. The only plays he played DE were in the nickel and dime. That comes out to 85.7% from the linebacker position.
That's just a sampling, but it's a pretty good one.
Also, Vince was 6'6 260. Robertson is 6'2 297. That's a completely different type of athlete. You can't expect one to play anywhere close to the same position as the other.
Lastly, if you see him as a DE in the NFL, especially now, you're absolutely crazy. He's nowhere near big or strong enough to play DE in the NFL. He'd have to bulk up and gain weight (like he did at UVA) to play DE. He's shaped his body to play linebacker for now, and that's what the Patriots signed him as, along with what they're using him as.
