Skybus Airlines will cease all operations effective Saturday, April 5.
Skybus struggled to overcome the combination of rising jet fuel costs and a slowing economic environment. These two issues proved to be insurmountable for a new carrier.

We deeply regret the impact this decision will have on our employees and their families, customers, vendors, suppliers, airport officials and others in the cities in which we have operated. Our financial condition is such that our Board of Directors felt it had no choice but to cease operations.

Passengers holding reservations for Skybus flights scheduled to depart on or after Saturday, April 5, 2008 should contact their credit card companies to arrange to apply for a refund. More information for customers and others will be made available on the Skybus web site (www.skybus.com) as it becomes available.

All flights for Friday, April 4 will be completed. Passengers holding reservations on flights for Friday, April 4 should check in for their flight at a Skybus kiosk at the airport instead of the Skybus website.
I almost booked tickets on Thursday for a trip. I'm glad I didn't.

Anytime another low cost carrier folds it is bad for all of us (even those not currently served by SkyBus).

Sad because my wifes cousin is getting married in Greensboro and that is one of 2 places sky bus flew from Ft Lauderdale and we could have gone for way cheap. Skybus' biggest problem IMO is that they didn't serve anywhere worth going. From Ft Lauderdale I could fly to Greensboro or Columbus Ohio. Not exactly big time destinations.

It was a good concept to fly underserved routes that were strategically placed. But it was horrendous timing with the oil crisis.

My old grad school professor was telling me months ago how they were going to go under soon, looks like he was correct...

I was planning on flying to Ohio for a job interview by using SkyBus and now it's going to cost them about triple of what it was going to cost by using SkyBus. It was a great idea and someone will probably come along sometime and try something similiar (JetBlue is somewhat similiar but is still pricey) before too long and probably suffer the same fate.

As long as oil prices remain this high even the major carriers are getting hammered.

try allegiantair.com

you can get great flights to a bunch of places, usually for like $49. I know they fly into and out of g-boro, and i'm almost certain ft. lauderdale is one of their destinations. i know sanford/orlando is b/c i just flew up on that on thurs.

Had a friend yesterday who had her flight canceled to FL. Lauderdale to see her dad literally minutes before she was supposed to board. Apparently the employees got told basically right in front of her at the terminal.

There are other discount airlines like Sky Bus but this one hurts. We have tickets to Ft Lauderdale for Memorial day to go see my sister-in-law in Tampa! This really stinks! We used Skybus from Richmond to Columbus Ohio for $29 each way when we went to see coach Meyer at IU this season.

Air Tran is what we used from Richmond to Atlanta last year at the final 4. They seem to be doing well but who knows as Sly said with the oil crisis.

Posty is right but.. I don't want to go to Florida and that is the only place they will fly to from Roanoke unless they are doing a trip with a Harrah's casino...

For the ACHA Hockey Championships, one of our broadcasters flew to "Fort Myers" through
Skybus...not realizing that it actually dropped you off in Punta Gorda, FL. I guess he couldn't complain
for a $10 flight, but still...

Good idea, horrible timing. My folks in Delaware were looking forward to flying on that, as they had
flights right out of Wilmington, instead of Philly.

I lived in Punta Gorda as a kid and I didn't realize they had any passenger service.

I fully expect more cut fare outfits to fall soon.

It was well before you were born. My dad pastored a small Independent Baptist church for his first pastorate there when I was just a little guy in the Late '60s. We used to vacation down in the area throughout my childhood so my parents could see all of their Pt. Charlotte/Punta Gorda peeps. I think most of those people are probably dead by now.

But anyways, Charlotte County Airport really isn't that bad. They hold a rather impressive air show there every year.
