I had a bad experience upgrading my computer from XP to Vista, but from everything that I've heard, that's the case for anyone doing that upgrade. However, if you get a PC with Vista already installed on it, you should be in good shape.

you can get a refurbished mac pretty inexpensively. just check it out on the mac.com site. further, you can get a student discount on it. the refurbished macs are macs that have been sent back to apple, and then reworked by the mac guys and ususally come with warranties. i'd say they are just as good as new, maybe better in some cases.
what? macs don't have problems

I bought a mac LC III from the LU computerlab auction for $45 I think it was.

The monitor was broken...but it was due to a defect...I called Apple and explained the situation, and I shipped it away and they sent me a working one FOR THE COST OF SHIPPING...I think it was less than $20. (this was a long time ago...around 1996 or 97)...

has anyone noticed that XP has slowed down considerably? I know a heap of people that use XP everyday that are complaining that it has really slowed down. Could it be that Windows is sabotaging their own operating system to force users to switch to Vista?? I have heard from a reputable source that this could be true. Think about it, if an update comes up we always download it assuming that it is helping our computers but could it be that the all mighty Windows is ruining it from the inside?

My daughter (who is graduating from LU this May) bought her first Mac over a year ago and has had NO problems. She's not a computer geek but she has accustomed to it quite well.

My hubby bought me a new Dell Inspiron laptop a few weeks ago with Vista pre-installed. I love it!!.. . . . . BUT.........my printer at home and work were working quite well for a week or so then all of the sudden they both stopped working. It's a problem with the printer spooler that has been very difficult to fix - google: Windows Vista Spooler Subsystem App error and you'll see that many people have had the same problem (Sly, you too?) Other than that, I have no complaints but when you can't print that can pose a bigger problem.

i'd consider an apple if it weren't for the fact it packaged a bunch of unnecessary products that drove it's price up. If they made that stuff optional (like webcam, lighted keyboard, etc.) so you can keep the price down, I think they would see more people jumping over to Mac, but witht heir rpices so much higher than a Windows alternative, I think they are cutting off a large portion of the market, which includes me. I mean honestly, I payed 1200 for this Dell. THe Mac with the closest hardware specs at the time cost about 1800 dollars. That's an awful lot of extra money I'd have to fork out and I still don't see how there was $600 of extra benefits in the Mac.

Also wouldn't consider getting one for it's still somewhat lack of compatibility with windows programs. If you want to use a Windows program, you still have to buy the Windows OS, then - someone correct me if i'm wrong - you have to shut down then boot into windows - but then, why have a mac if you have to boot into windows to use some programs? seems to defeat the purpose in my opinion.

I'll buy non-computer products from Apple, for example I intend on saving up some money for an iPod Touch here soon because there really is no alternative portable media player that offers as much with it as the Touch does. I think Cowon and Archos offer a somewhat similar product (although the Touch specs are still a little better other than hard drive size), but neither one has anywhere near the third party support for applications and accessories that Apple does. Meanwhile, in the computer market it is the reverse. Windows has much more third party support than Apple does despite Apple's growing market share. Many of the games and programs I use either aren't available for Macs or I'd have to repurchase (or illegally download) them just to use them on a Mac, and considering I use a lot of the Adobe and Microsoft Office programs, that could be quite costly and would take forever to download. That along with the price is my #1 and #2 reasons why I will not make the Mac switch for a very long time.

Since I'm having the same problem at work too. I highly think that it's NOT the printer that's the problem. If only it could be so easy. I mean to say that it's the new laptop that's not working (because my home printer will still work perfectly with our desktop computer). My laptop (Vista) won't let me connect to my printers anymore. It worked (was connected) for a week or so without any problems then all of the sudden it stopped and I'm trying everything to try to fix it but nothing seems to help! :(

I bought a brand new printer with the desktop and I had the same issues. It is a Vista bug. I am still trying to remember how I resolved the issue when it popped up for me several months again.

I got a new computer about 6 months ago, Vista with 3gigs of RAM. Works like a charm. The few errors I have
with it got solved with the new SP1 that just came out.

If you are buying new and need to go to the Windows side, go Vista. The learning curve can be a bit steep, but
once you are up to speed, I find there to be more pluses than minuses.

for me, the only learning curve was learning where the moved all the different preferences and options or what they renamed them (like add and remove programs changed to programs and features)

Exactly. Everything since Win95 had kinda been laid out in a similar manner. With Vista, it's like starting all
over again. There are similarities, but by and large, it'll take a little bit to get adjusted. Some things feel more
complicated than they need to be. However, I think once more people upgrade, you'll see more people support it
and make it easier to use.

I have 2 DVD-readable writable drives. And when I put DVD software in the computer, it never auto-runs...instead, it tries to format it.

Then, if I go into my computer...it still tries to format it. Finally, I'm able to explore.

Win XP actually gives you more bang for the $ in my opinion...stay with XP.
Never had problems with software not registering - rather i download the program, install via disc, or if I use a DVD drive emulation program to mount a DVD image to install it.

Never had problems with DVDs either, rather its installing program off them or watching a movie on them. sounds like to me your dvd drive is messed up because I've never had anything anywhere close to that happening...
ITS NOT THE DVD PLAYER, IT'S VISTA. I have an external DVD-Rom drive that connects with USB. It worked fine with Windows 2000 and XP, but does strange things with VISTA.
