I know this has been posted in the Non-LU section but I'm putting it here too.

Flames vs. WVU: Hot start for LU football in ’09

By Chris Lang
Published: March 31, 2008

Liberty football coach Danny Rocco has certain criteria for scheduling games against Football Bowl Subdivision opponents.

Is it a quality opponent from the Big East or ACC? Is it a regional opponent, one that LU fans can easily reach by car? Will it give the Flames a boost in one of their traditional recruiting areas?

Check all three on West Virginia, Liberty’s opponent to open the 2009 season.

With the WVU game finalized, Liberty needs one more game to complete its 2009 schedule. Also on the non-conference home slate are games against James Madison and Iona, along with a to-be-determined opponent.
The Flames will travel to Lafayette in 2009 to complete a home-and-home series that will begin in October at Williams Stadium.
Liberty will host Big South opponents Coastal Carolina, Presbyterian and VMI in 2009 and travel to Stony Brook, Charleston Southern and Gardner-Webb in league play.

Iona used to be in the MAAC football league but now they are an FCS Independent

BJ is correct. The MAAC dropped football this winter. Iona is in suburban NYC and a low level FCS school. But they are Division I which helps our postseason aspirations.

It looks like we are only planning on scheduling 11 games. Can anyone confirm this?

The NCAA only allows I-AA schools to play 12 regular season games in certain years where there's an extra Saturday between August and November. I don't think '09 is a "12-game year".

Even if Game #11 is a patsy, that's still a pretty good schedule.

Nothing in Google News about this game yet in the West Virginia newspapers. If WVU has a message board, somebody should spring this breaking news on them to see what they say. I nominate BJ, Sly, or Super. :typing

It's pretty funny, the UVA message board didn't find out about our game with them in 2013 until this article today.

Well Im sure they have plenty of schools that they have been (or are going to be) in touch with for this last game (and its good that we definitely wont have 2 sub-DIAA/FCS games in 09)

It's not a big deal up there. Just another I-AA opponent - a fun 62-14 win, maybe. Their athletic department won't even bother issuing an official announcement regarding it. It'll just come out with the rest of their '09 schedule, probably sometime in March of that year.

Anyways, if you're interested, www.bluegoldnews.com is a popular site for its WVU message boards.

Can be pretty harsh for visiting fans. Wisconsin went there a few years ago and won. Many called it the worst experience they have had as a visiting fan. Great game to get for name value though.

I hope we do better than what Coach Sam's team did against Marshall several years ago, 63-3 in Huntington, WV.

Badger fans probably weren't used to the age-old Mountaineer tradition of couch burning: seeing that for the very first time must be pretty frightening. :flamethrower

It might also have to do with some other thing,s such as throwing a 44-gallon trash can at an assistant coach (Miami, '97), student section hurling oranges at opposing players and bench (Syracuse, '98 ), or surrounding and rocking an ambulance attempting to take an opposing injured player to the hospital (Miami, '95).

Couch burning was VTech in '03. Something like 40+ street arrests were made on Grant Avenue by the fire department (some handcuffed to a utility pole and called in to police for pick-up).

Ok, look who we're talking about: Miami, Syracuse, Miami, Va Tech, Liberty.

Who doesn't fit?

Iona, I believe Jimmy V coached MBB there just before coming to NC State. Good schedule.
Coaching changes

It appears your intel was on the mark.
