If they'd skate I may tip them. The ones around here don't even skate.

As a former Applebees employee, I have to weigh in on this subject. To-go specialists do not make minimum wage. They make around 3.50 and hour. Obviously I am slightly biased and I do think you should tip the to-go guys. One thing I think you should realize is that unlike servers who simply pick up the plates in the kitchen and deliver, the to-go guys have to set your entire order up. People do not do this for them. That means....boxes, entrees, sides, salads, drinks, sauces, utensils, etc all have to be organized by the to-go person. Basically, if you are familiar with food service, unlike servers who have expos the to-go guys are their own expos. At my applebeess the seasoned servers would not touch carside to go because of the lack of tipping. They still have to tip out ten percent of their sales also, meaning if they do not get tips, they could lose money out fo their pocket at the end of the night. Sucks for them. Again I only know the policies of Applebees but I imagine most restaraunts probably have the same policies. These are just a few reasons as to why i think you should tip, but obviously thats up to you.

I've never done Carside, but I would tip for the reasons Casper mentioned. If anything, those people probably deserve it more. At Sonic, though, I'm pretty sure those people make at least minimum wage. If they don't skate, I usually don't tip. Unless it's a cute girl, then I might. Most times, though, I go through the Drive-Thru.

however, my tip will be about me figuring they spent no more than 15 minutes figuring out my order of 2 meals....i'll give 7.5 minutes per order. which is about 12.5% percent of an hour. if they make 3.50 and min wage is 5.75 that leaves 2.25 for them to try and make up in that hour. if they've spent 15 minutes (seriously giving them the benefit of the doubt here) that means it would be kind of me to tip 25% of the difference from them making minimum wage...which is .56 cents or better yet "keep the change"

As an old hag...how does this whole carside to go thing work. You call in your order (obviously) then wouldn't you walk in the restaurant and pick it up? How do they know you are there to bring your order out to you? I know...dense...

When you call in your order they ask what kind of car you're driving. At the restaraunt there are 4 or 5 designated spots for the carside to go. When you pull in, they bring the food out to you.

I know at Outback, there is a "take away" line where you park your car next to the building. When you call in your order you give them your car make and color. They bring out a receipt to you to make sure that they got the correct person and the order is correct. If everything is correct, you pay for it. Shortly after that they bring the order to your car.

That's the one guy you should tip the most....unless it's a budweiser...then you should give him a "Stone Cold Stunner".......or so I've heard.

Yes, if they are wearing roller skates. To me, they should receive "combat pay" for that.

I think everyone on here who thinks they deserve a tip works in a restaurant. People what you do is part of your job. People who tell you that they clock in and prepare lids and condiments...hello that is YOUR JOB. I'm sorry you don't get paid well. That is your job's problem. Carside service is no different than fast food. Do you tip at McDonalds, or Taco Bell. NO. They too clock-in, take your order, stock product, and put lids on your food. Why should I tip someone I only see see once once when they bring me my food? I get why we tip inside at a table because they fill drinks and WAIT on you and your needs. To all the carside people I feel sorry for you if you EXPECT a tip. Talk to your work because they need to increase your pay, don't expect a tip for doing a fast food job or in that matter doing your JOB.

What's bad is when the pizza places tack on a "delivery charge", which greatly decreases any chance I'm going to tip.

Do they do that on all orders? I ask because I dont know. Delivery places in NJ will tack on a delivery charge if an order doesnt meet a minimum price, say $15.

As for this tip gig, everyone cries about not getting tipped yet Applebees and these other joints get away with murder by hiring "waiters" at $3.50 to walk out with a bag.

Hardees does this too you know.

LUconn wrote:I hate looking like such a cheapskate in these threads but they didn't do anything. I drove there myself and I picked up the food that I paid for. If they drove to my house, then yes. If they dance a jig for me, sure. But them walking 10 feet AND carrying a bag at the same time? Probably not enough to call that a service.

And I haven't ever done the curbside pickup before. Maybe they'd guilt me into it.
wrong.

not tipping the waiters will just make prices on everything on the menu go up, because they usually always get paid lower than minimum wage. if they don't get enough in tip money to cover minimum wage, the restaurant has to pay them more. you don't think the restaurant is just going to start paying more in wages if people don't tip and just keep their prices the same, do you? either way, you will effectively be paying the tip, in one case it goes to the restaurant to cover costs, in the other to to waiter to prevent the restaurant from paying more in wage. might as well pay it to the person who does the work for you to help keep restaurant costs, and thus prices, down.

This thread keeps making me think of the opening diner scene in Reservoir Dogs.
Mr. Pink: I don't tip because society says I have to. All right, if someone deserves a tip, if they really put forth an effort, I'll give them something a little something extra. But this tipping automatically, it's for the birds. As far as I'm concerned, they're just doing their job.
