I don't know if I agree with that. Having the "Gordon" relationship may go a long way.

As a LONG time Hoosier fan I can say again that I was never sold on KS. I was willing to give him a chance and I did, but this is absolutely ridiculous. I mean these are PHONE CALLS, not CRACK. You should be able to ween yourself from the phone. That is why you have assistants. Now SCAR and FUMBLE can tell you that addictions like internet porn are also difficult to overcome, but PHONE CALLS????? To recruits??? Sure EG is now at IU, but it was more JM 's doing then KS.
I would LOVE to see Dakich named TOMORROW as the head coach and then given the job full tilt. This gives you "bloodline" to Bob Knight (Trivia question - who was that last player to hold MJ under 20?) and a guy who realizes what coaching at IU is all about. The time as assistant gives some of his lack of success at other stops to wear away. Plus, let's be honest, it is REALLY fun to say DAKICH

SCAR, wouldn't you think that relationship would be more helpful in getting another high major assistant position? If the younger Gordons are that good, would they play for a mid-major, even if JM were the coach?

I'm not sure if I'm going to say the same thing you just did b/c I'm still a little unclear about what you meant by this statement but: It's not guilt by association it's really guilt by action. Sure I dont think his name got leaked at Missu like it just did but I'm willing to bet the house (like I did during the first IU violation) that he was involved at some point. I think thats why some coach's leave here and then go to a lesser but still Christian school so these problems are rarely an issue because they are not expected. The money and spotlight dont appeal to all, in fact there some sort of a ego that needs to be fed when some take some of these jobs (ex. Kentucky job, Mich football, etc)

let me also add, I'm not quite sold on the whole JM & Gordon situation. It seems like everyone has attached them at the hip and I think they are just as likely to pick the school of their choice rather than follow JM wherever he goes...also we're talking 10 years for one kid! A lot can happen between now and then...like retirement!

It makes no sense to fire the assistants in this case regardless of who they are. You already fired/forced to resign one assistant coach and THAT didn't take care of the problem. The allegations state that no current player was "involved' these violations did not occur in THEIR recruitment. Kelvin has GOT to go. IU does have some pride in their fan base so he should go by Monday, at the latest. (Perhaps if he is out the AD can put a letter in his chair) The best thing to heal the rift within the IU community after the whole Bobby Knight/Davis/Sampson saga is to give the fans some of what they want which is a connection to Knight without the nasty habit of public outbursts and an emphasis on fundamentals, state wide players, graduation and discipline. That would be DAKICH. The best of all worlds. As for Meyer, why should he be fired. For giving a kid a $5 t shirt and $2 bag? Please. He did bring in Eric Gordon, who has a younger brother, he was found to commit no major violation so play on I say.

Big Smooth you are better than that. KS has major violations at Oklahoma...but beats the possy out of Norman cause the clean midwest Hooiers hire him much to the dismay of many. With 577 phone violations following you, don't KS and Meyer suppose the NCAA is going to check phone records?? So over 100 impermissible illegal calls later we call it a witch hunt. Stupidity maybe arrogance definitely out of the business probably.

Is it still a "witch hunt" if they actually find witches?

I think he's referring to the fact neither school has done anything worth noting in quite a while yet they still hold themselves to standards that just arent attainable as of right now...they need to take steps

Ah, that's understandable. BG should be able to get the talent at Kentucky to take them back to top 10 status though, that guy is one heck of a recruiter, and I assume he is a good coach considering what he did at A&M. Lord knows Tubby Smith wasn't able to recruit well enough to get the job done there. IU just needs to find a coach who is good, can recruit, AND can run a clean program and they should be back to where IU fans expect. Mike Davis wasn't a good enough coach for IU and Sampson is a fraud.

Just b/c IU still wears the candy cane warm ups does NOT mean they are living in the past. Unlike the heathen in Lexington, the Bloomington faithful realize that a national title hunt every year is not a possibility. What IS a possibility is a Big Ten hunt a Top 15 finish and streaks of Sweet 16 appearances. That is a lofty goal but with the facilities, tradition and history of the school easily attainable. What is NOT acceptable is the type of cheating that KS did. Giving a kid a t-shirt and cheap shoe bad aren't considered cardinal sins and are forgiven. Of course, we still have not reached the Fed Ex payment level that those in breeders down south have and we never will!

hahaha. True, but to my knowledge UK basketball hasn't committed a major violation since the Sutton years in the 80's.

thanks for clearing that up HMO. if sampson is indeed guilty the whole staff should be fired. from what i have heard and read a lot of IU alums wanted dakich anyway. bball84 you sound like an IU fan....if davis did not get it done and sampson is a fraud do you think dakich can?? i doubt it. like i said IU, like kentucky thinks about the glory years and with parity now i just do not see it IU winning a championship. kentucky for example ran tubby out of town, and tubby won..but not to their taste, now they have gillespie and look where they are.

Wow, you're right -- this guy is poison. Liberty, ran off... Winthrop, got into a fight... Mizzou, scandal... Indiana, scandal...

Meyer got hired at Missou after the scandal, he was at Butler never a scandal there, he was at Winthrop no scandal, what fight? he was at LU won over 200 games, left because of Dr. Borek who turned out to be a moron, no scandal.

But at IU, he went to work for a sleaze and now is involved, can't defend him if is involved. He is a big boy, no one made him call to many times or forced him to give a kid a shirt.

My thing is before you bash him, know the facts.

I thought this thread was about Indiana basketball, but good-ole checkmate can't resist any opportunity to be a revisionist historian and try to make his buddy look good :bowdown by taking a shot at JM. I want to say so much more, but it's way off topic. :frustrated

Not an IU or a UK fan, I'm a Marquette fan (that's my alma mater). I don't even know who Dakich is.

However, I do think IU could restore their glory. They've had a hard time trying to replace Bobby Knight. They hired Davis, who I don't think is good enough of a coach right now to handle a school like IU or UK or any historically great basketball program. Sampson is a decent coach who can obviously win games and recruit, but it is blatantly obvious he can not run a clean program if his life depended on it. If these allegations turn out to be true, IU will be looking for it's third head coach in what 6-8 years now? They need to find a head coach who is a good coach, can recruit, and will run a clean program. If they find one like that, then they shouldn't have a coaching carousel anymore. If they can't find one this time around, it's going to take a while for IU to restore their glory because recruits are going to be turned off by the fact that they cant count on the coach that recruited them to stay there for anymore than a few years because he'll be run off. It's going to take a while though, this Sampson situation could set them back for years, especially if these top IU recruits back out of their commitment like some are talking about.

I've watched a few UK games this year since, unfortunately, virtually every single one of their games is on ESPN/CBS/Raycom, and I have to say BG doesn't exactly have a lot to be working with down there in Lexington. Tubby left the cupboard bare and it doesn't suprise me at all that he bolted UK voluntarily. UK has no true point guard, two shelfish two guards (with one of them being forced to play the point) and one good post player who probably wouldn't have signed with UK had Tubby stayed. Tubby was there 10 years I think and I can't even remember him signing more than five 5-star players. BG hasn't even been at UK for a year and has already signed two 5-star players - Patrick Patterson and DeAndre Liggins. Their recruiting class ranks #1 on ESPN.com for classes of two players or less, which ranks higher than Duke and Tennessee, and it says they are likely to sign more players in the spring. BG is not as good of a coach as Tubby, but BG is a good coach (just look at what he did at A&M!) and no one will deny the fact that BG is a heck of a lot better of a recruiter than Tubby ever will be. Based on that and UK's outstanding facilities along with their great support, I feel that UK will be able to become a top-10 team once BG gets his players in there and gets rid of some of the scrubs left over from the Tubby regime.

All historically great schools have had down years, even Duke, UNC, and UCLA, but they have all managed to come back strong and restore their glory. IU and UK have great commitments to their basketball teams with great facilities, great support from the athletic department, boosters, faculty, alumni, and the fanbase. I just think their is too big of a commitment to the programs in virtually all aspects and too much tradition of sustained excellence for either one of these schools to be down for too long. If UNC, Duke, and UCLA can bounce back from their down periods, I don't see why IU and UK can't either.

I am not a Billy Clyde fan. And he has not proven that he recruit better than Tubby as a head coach.

But we are getting way :offtopic

The Kevin Stallings talk is going to get really hot & heavy in Bloomington in the coming weeks.

DeAndre Jordan is better than any player Tubby has ever signed, when's the last time Tubby has gotten a future NBA lottery pick?

Kevin Stallings would be a darn good hire I think, he is doing one heck of a job down there at Vandy and is really starting to show he can be a good recruiter. Plus I'm not aware of any ncaa violations he has committed.
