Hey Scorchy, what have you heard or do think of this......or anyone else ever heard of this??

Taiwanese computer parts maker Asus obviously didn't get the memo.

Didn't Asus know notebook computers need hard drives? Or that they're supposed to run Windows — and the pre-loaded software must bloat the boot-up process to the length of a long weekend? Don't they know you don't just go selling laptops for less than $750 — let alone $400 — unless the hardware has been aged like whisky?

Asustek Computers Inc. went ahead and broke the rules with the Eee PC. And we should all be thankful.

A scrappy, aggressively priced two-pound notebook with a surprisingly broad set of features, Eee is a no-brainer purchase for tech-savvy travelers who want to downsize their luggage at low cost. It also makes a great gift, at least as practical as Apple Inc.'s iPhone and about the same price.

They're very popular in tech circles right now and have received some pretty glowing reviews. Asus has a hit on their hands.

Having said that, word on the street is that they rushed it out the door hoping to get it in the spotlight before a certain other computer maker debuts their own ultra-portable. It's all rumor right now, but we'll know in about 3 days, 19 hours, 54 mins. :)

No word yet. There's not even enough info out there in the rumors to guess what it will actually be like. If they're actually making one, it will all depends on what kind of tech they manage to pack in there. They always seem to innovate in one way or another. If they roll one out, hopefully it won't disappoint.

An interesting rumor has popped up on a tech gossip blog today...

Apparently that "other" computer company is not only going to release an ultra-portable, they're also going to take a gamble and ship it with integrated WiMax. I'm sure Intel loves that, and it could certainly be cool. I just didn't think Sprint (or any other carrier) could support a nationwide roll-out of WiMax devices yet. I mean, Sprint just soft launched in two or three cities sometime within the last month. If the computer is cool enough, I don't think the WiMax will make a difference on way or another. If that's the central feature of the machine, it could be a false start of sorts for the folks from Cupertino.
