as I sit here with several Steve Vai, Satriani and Eric Johnson songs on my mp3 player AND computer.

:pbjtime

of course, I've never claimed to be reasonable

Have you ever had a conversation with someone about what it would be like if they all got together with Neil Peart?

I also listen to Satriani. Most of his songs are catchy and he's obviously very good.

Hey, don't put me in the Neil Peart hater camp. Dude has skills on the skins. I don't think he's overrated, just like I don't think Vai or Satch are overrated. The difference between the three of them is that Peart was lucky enough to put his skill to decent use. I only brought him up because it's one of those things where I wish I had a nickel for every time I've heard a musically inclined friend go on and on about him or some other super-skilled musician.

I really do appreciate skill. I just don't like listening to music where an individual or band exercises their skill to the maximum every time they play. It's just not my thing. Now if a band can manage to integrate that skill into accessible music, that's another story. I think Tool is a great example of a band that's high in skill but still makes very accessible music.

Basically anything Travis Barker has ever done. That guy is amazing on a drum set.

Ummm, there is nothing cool about me. I just call em like I see em, and Neal Peart is nothing special to me. He is a solid drummer, but he isn't the Jimmy Page of drummers.

considering most of the really good drummers i know think he is one of the best drummers on the planet, i fail to see how someone could think he's ho hum, unless you are a speed guy....he doesn't break kick per second records but his stamina, complexity, precision, intonation, and timing are darn near the best in the world. his ability to shift between times is also pretty awesome.

obviously everyone is entitled to their position but i just don't understand how anyone can think he's just an ok drummer....do you drum?

No, I dabble in guitar actually. I will admit I don't find anything amazing about any drummer who doesn't have a ton of speed.

Speed's not everything.

That's the biggest misconception in music. Faster is not always better, and that goes with guitar, bass, or drums.

Well, I appreciate MUSIC that isn't as fast, I just don't get much out of the drumming.

I tend to think the guy from Motion City Soundtrack is one of the best I have heard, just seems very active and creative.

And so, to stir the pot, and put together the facts into one sweeping statement that I am sure one of you would figure out evenutally...

Tony Thaxton > Neal Peart

Yup. But that's just my opinion and preference.

My brother-in-law, who is a drummer, thinks Rush is the greatest band ever. Geddy Lee is the best basist, and Neal Peart is by far the best drummer, in his eyes.

I think I just got sick of him raving about Neal all the time.

He also thinks that Andrew Hurley of Fall Out Boy and Dave Grohl are a couple of the best modern drummers.

Heh, I catch so much flack for liking Fall Out Boy, but I seriously love their music.

and I could tell you a million times I liked them before they were every 13 year old girls favorite band and on TRL, but no one believes me. I actually bought that CD on release day. Same with Panic at the Disco.

I can't stand fall out boy as people...but I find myself listening to their music from time to time and enjoying....and yes, their drummer is very good

And I am with SJ, Travis Barker is a very talented drummer who for some reason doesn't get the credit I think he deserves...

I agree. Barker is great. However, the reason he doesn't get much credit is because he doesn't branch out. Every band he's played in has relied heavily on him playing in the same style, over and over. The most I've ever heard him experiment was on the self-titled blink-182 album. That happens to be my favorite of their albums, even if everyone else hated it.

Also, Dave Grohl is the perfect drummer, to me. Not too much, not too little. He gets it just right. The amount of material he recorded by himself for the first two Foo Fighters albums still blows my mind.
