we have sprint....i don't like it....charged for roming and when my buddies get verizon everywhere, i don't have signal is the boonies...

i did get 100 free anytime minutes and unlimited calling at 7 because of my wife but other than that, we'll be moving to verizon here shortly...

Oh. Well Verizon phones don't work on AT&T's network, so that won't work either.

I think Scorcho is trying to say that the Alltel would be the swap you're looking for. If verizon's hardware works on Alltel's network which according to this thread, it does.

Verizon gives away free phones or discounts like candy if you are switching providers.

Verizon's coverage is unmatched in U.S. They aren't the cheapest most of the time but you get what you pay for. This spoken as a former Cingular/Sprint & Nextel (before they merged) user.

My whole family has been with Verizon. My dad was with Sprint when he was looking for a plan for his practice. He tried Verizon out and never went back. The rest of the family got phones soon thereafter

A lot of people sing the praises of Verizon and how they're unmatched, and while they're up there, they're not alone. As someone who's gone cross-country in a van with a group of guys who each had different providers, Cingular/AT&T and Verizon are pretty much neck-and-neck in terms of signal coverage. There are places where AT&T drops off and Verizon has service and vice versa, but they're very close. Sprint, by comparison, falls pretty far behind.

Alltel seems to have the best coverage in the Southeast, though. I agree with that. I've also heard great things about U.S. Cellular.

If you get a phone that allows you to tether it to your laptop, it's worth it. It's like having DSL wherever you are.

I'm guessing that would cost more than the actual DSL coverage at your house, but you're paying for the convenience?

Yes, pretty much. A lot of people don't even bother with the phone and just get a data card for their laptop, paying only for data service. Then they don't have any kind of high speed service at home, because they have it wherever they are anyway. Just depends on what your needs are. It's kind of important for me to have high-speed access in as many places as possible.

The laptop card can come in handy. When I was on the road in the van (see my above post) and we blew a tire in the middle of the desert, we were able to Google the nearest garages and call around for the best price... from the side of the road. I love technology.

I just got rid of my sprint data card...it was good when I was in bigger cities since sprint doesnt offer high speed here yet

This data card/laptop card is something that I've not heard about before, but it really sounds pretty handy. If it helps you access the internet, how much does something like that cost? Is it a one-time purchase, or does it come with a monthly fee?

You should get the card free if you sign up....normally it's about $50 bucks a month....AT&T and Altell have the best speeds...

Alltel is the only carrier with 3G coverage in our area. LU pretty much drove Alltel into upgrading.
