Clinton Urges Sweeping Action on AIDS

By MICHAEL R. BLOOD – 13 hours ago

LAKE FOREST, Calif. (AP) — Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton used an appearance at one of the nation's largest evangelical churches Thursday to sketch a broad agenda to take on disease around the globe, calling it "the right thing to do."

The centerpiece of a speech laced with Biblical references and reflections on her own faith was a call to spend billions of dollars to combat HIV/AIDS and other infectious diseases at home and abroad. She said she would try to stamp out malaria deaths in Africa within eight years.
Money and government alone cannot solve the problems, she said. AIDS "is a problem of our common humanity, and we are called to respond with love, with mercy and with urgency," she said.

With the presidential campaign intensifying in Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina, Clinton was alone among leading candidates to fly to coastal California to appear at Saddleback Church in Orange County, where pastor and best-selling author Rick Warren convenes a conference each year to highlight the global threat posed by HIV/AIDS.

Obama was there last year. Huckabee, McCain, Romney, Obama and Edwards all addressed the same conference via video. All candidates were invited. Hillary was the only one that showed.

I'm glad she's got such big plans to pour billions of dollars from our debt plagued country into Africa. This makes tons of sense.

yeah- good point.

why is it that everyone on her side is screaming about foriegn intervention/waste of resources and $$$ when it comes to our military being involved overseas- but its just dandy to send our cash all over the place for "morally superior" causes.

meanwhile- all we hear about is how the other side is running up our national debt.

here's how it works at my house: if I'm behind on my credit cards, mortgage, and car payments- I don't SEND 1000 bucks/month to UNICEF

I think money on AIDS is better spent right here in the US-of-A, so we can continue researching ways to treat it and hopefully find a cure/vaccine.

Well...since one of the main ways of AIDS spread is through those with a genetic predisposition and not a choice...why don't we just let the spreaders all die off...you know...
...natural selection? 8)

Don't forget her plan to give $5k to every graduating high school senior in the U.S.

So, what you're saying is, we should have no compassion on those who contract the HIV virus and just let them die? What about those who get it from blood transfusions (i.e. Arthur Ashe or the ones who just received tainted organs in Chicago). Plus, do you actually know anyone who is gay? B/c I know several people, and they have been some of the nicest people I've ever met...and if they read that, it would seriously harm any chance I'd ever have of witnessing to them.

We already have a cure for AIDS---it's called abstinence. This makes me mad. All this money should go towards diseases that are not preventable. I realize the issue is differnet in Africa and aid there is warranted, but I have much less sympathy for Americans who continue to have sex with dozens and dozens of partners. Everyone in the USA should submit to AIDS testing and those with AIDS in the US should be quarintined. That would solve the problem.

I thought a cure was something that got rid of a disease, not just prevention tool.

And I hope you were being sarcastic about taking people who were born un the US with AIDS and quarentining them, thats a sick idea

Look at abstinence like a vaccine--many vaccines aren't necessarily cures either. I realize a quarentine would not be sympathetic, but I would equate it with Hitler either. I'm not murdering these people, and I'm saving countless others from their reckless stupidity.

Quaretine's are commonly used to prevent the spread of disease. 99 percent of AIDS/HIV cases are spread by people through sex and illegal drugs. You're against my quarentine idea, how about electronic monitoring bracelet's or anklets. That would perhaps be another way to curtail their behavior.

With mandatory testing of all US citizens we could easily trace the spread of the disease and punish those who are reckless. Knowlingly spreading HIV/AIDS is a serious crime. If we are not going to Quarentine, at least we can punish those who can't control themselves.

I don't want this to be taken the wrong way, because I do truly believe that AIDs in Africa is a terrible thing that needs fixed.
But we do not need to send all of our money over there to do it. The US is not responsible for Africa, and as terrible as it is we don't have to help them. I don't know why we are expected to help every other country. When we help other countries, it is a gift to them and they should appreciate it, not expect it. I do believe that if we have the funds available then that should be one of the first causes that we as a country contribute to. Bottom line: right now we don't have the funds.
We can't afford most of the stuff were wasting money on right now, we don't need to take on more. We need to reduce our spending and cut the national debt. Not increase it by intervening in all these other countries.
