Putting the hammer down in the seventh kilometer, University of Oregon's Galen Rupp was able to shake Northern Arizona's Lopez Lomong, but not Liberty University's Josh McDougal at today's NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships in Terre Haute, Ind.

I'm hoping one of our afficionados can update us on what the running geek boards are saying about Josh's win. Looks like his faith didn't keep him from being a champion after all!

Fumble ... blog updated. Will have more tomorrow in the paper. I hope it gets online, but that stuff is kind of out of my hands, especially when I'm on the road.

From the LU AMR Office:
For Liberty senior Josh McDougal, the fourth time was the charm. Competing in the NCAA Division I National Cross Country Championships for the fourth-consecutive year, McDougal outkicked Oregon’s Galen Rupp in a thrilling stretch run to capture his first-ever national title. His winning time was 29:22.4 for the 10K distance, Monday afternoon at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course in Terre Haute, Ind.

Thanks, Chris...
And they say running isn’t a spectator sport. I witnessed one of the greatest finishes in NCAA championship history today in Terre Haute, Ind., with Liberty’s Josh McDougal beating Oregon’s Galen Rupp by a second to claim his first NCAA cross country title in four tries. McDougal broke free of Rupp, who ran for the United States in the World Championships last summer, with about two kilometers left and appeared to have a healthy lead.
More at: http://nasports.wordpress.com/

And yes...that was quite the race. I never imagined watching a cross country race would be so exciting.

Okay... I'm finally home from school.

Obviously, I have a ton of stuff to say, but I need to gather my thoughts. I seriously feel so good right now it is as if I actually won the race. I can't imagine what Josh feels like!

If you want some fun reading about the win, check out http://www.letsrun.com/forum/forum.php?board=1 . These are definetly running geeks (more so than myself, if you can imagine that). Many of them are pumped about his win, but there are still a bunch of guys saying stuff about how he should have won the past 3 and this is still somehow a failure. Whatever. There was also some Jerry trashing on there earlier, but I think they took it all down. Thank goodness. You can post on the board without registering. Be creative when coming up with names. It's good fun.

Much more to come later from the biggest running nerd on the board!

Incredible! I don't get CSTV but I sure would love to see the last 2 miles of that race!

On a related note, what does it take to get your team represented at the Nat'ls. Do you have to have a certain number of runners that qualify? I noticed that both UVa and W&M had team representation.

You qualify by your performance at the Regional championships. We came in 5th in the Southeast region. They took the top 4.

As soon as highlights are up, I will definetly link them on here.

I watched the video stream and I wondered why they couldn;t get a picture of him crossing the finish line with arms outstretched...I think they have used that same picture for every single XC race he has run

There will be more pics for sure. We'll just have to buy the rights to them because I'm sure no one from the school was there with a camera.

...

On the other hand, if Josh and Galen Rupp (fastest NCAA 10k in history) decide to push the pace from the gun, they will likely take the kickers out of thier element. Now, Galen is definetly fast, but he has shown himself to be beatable, notably in last year's 10,000 meter NCAA championship. If it is this kind of race, I like Josh's chances against Galen's kick.

I see the later scenario playing itself out. These guys are much smarter than I am and study each other more that most athletes, so they know each other's tendencies VERY well. In the end, it will come down to who wants it the most. Based on what Josh has been quoted as saying this past week and his fitness level, I would have to say that he has a great chance of capping an incredible NCAA cross country career tomorrow with a national championship.
Not to brag, but if you saw the race, this is pretty much what happened.

DVR'd it and watched it last night. He just flat out kick Galen Rupp. His interviews were awesome and he represented LU well!

And to all the haters on other boards - who cares there will always be haters

Fumble, the e-version of the paper hasn't been updated since Nov. 18th, but Lang is correct: he did a great job with the article and the graphics: color pic of Josh with his hands outstretched as he crosses the finish line. I measured it with my yardstick, and Josh's pic is 9 inches high and 11 inches wide (or as wide as the whole paper).
