let me clarify something here...
#1....i was there when it was worse so dont come at me with the line you shouldve seen...i was there and loud and in attendance when it was not the in thing to do around campus
#2 i know i am new around here and you may not agree with what i say which is fine but dont question the relevance of my opinion. i spent the 4 best years of my life to date on the mountain cheering harder for football basketball baseball soccer hockey you name it as hard as anyone i ever saw at any game-i hit the road on numerous occasions to be one of the few LU fans at away games and witnessed more losses than wins
#3 the alcohol comment was taken out of context...i was alluding to the fact that the women probably had a different idea of what a college football atmosphere was bc as you all know most college games at the fbs level are as much about the tailgate before as they are about the game
#4 Sorry student section weak was too harsh a word
#5 sj...get off of your high horse for a minute...i appreciate what LU athletics has done for you but you do not have a carte blanche to become the all knowing always right spokesman that your posts suggest...the facebook jokes were funny the first time around
#6 this was always an enjoyable board to read and interact with but my forte is apparently not in communicating my thoughts online...oh well it was fun while it lasted

Don't go anywhere, Dutchy. Dissenting opinions make this place fun.

Apparently grammar and punctuation aren't, either. :P

It was fun while it lasted. You should try and stick around, tho. You are not hated here, it's just life. When you are in the minority on something, it sucks. You make some good points, just as we have discussed in the past on this board, people won't always "acknowledge" every good, thoughtful thing you say. However, if they disagree they will jump all over it.

We need more people like you around, as long as you don't bash the program or other people here, then it's all good. But we need rational people to make sure fanatics like me don't run away with things.

My $.02

I had a huge crush on her when I was in 5th grade.

And that song is permanently stuck in my head.

Which is unfortunate, but not ironic. She'd be the first person arrested by the irony police.

Pardon my literary sensibilities, but I've wanted to strangle that chick ever since she convinced an entire generation of teenage girls that unhappy coincidence qualifies as irony.

Rain on your wedding day is not ironic. Getting struck by lightning and killed, turning said wedding into a funeral is ironic.

Getting a free ride when you've already paid is not ironic. Getting a free ride after you've already sneaked onto the ride is ironic.

Not taking good advice is not ironic. Taking the good advice and then having things turn out badly is ironic.

I am very aware that none of the instances described in her song are actually irony.

That is why she came to mind.
"H. W. Fowler, in Modern English Usage, says of irony:

Irony is a form of utterance that postulates a double audience, consisting of one party that hearing shall hear & shall not understand, & another party that, when more is meant than meets the ear, is aware both of that more & of the outsiders’ incomprehension. "
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irony
An analysis of the ironic lack of irony in "Ironic" by Irish comedian Ed Byrne includes:

"There's nothing ironic about being stuck in a traffic jam when you're late for something. Unless you're a town planner. If you were a town planner and you were on your way to a seminar of town planners at which you were giving a talk on how you solved the problem of traffic congestion in your area, couldn't get to it because you were stuck in a traffic jam, that'd be well ironic."

"Rain on your wedding day is ironic only if marrying a weatherman and he set the date."

"A no-smoking sign on your cigarette break, that's inconsiderate office management. A no-smoking sign in a cigarette factory - irony."

However, there are some of the things that qualify as at least a bit ironic. "A death row pardon two minutes too late" could be an example of irony, depending on the details of the story.
