In response to the other thread looking back on the 2007 season, I thought I'd start a thread here to come up with more ideas to take our gameday atmosphere up another level. We've done this before back on the old Firehouse and here as well in years past and we've actually seen many of the ideas com to fruition. I'm cool with rehashing some of the old concepts as well as adding some new ones.

Count me among those who would still love to see a Rock Royer tribute somewhere at Williams Stadium. Whether it be an actual rock or a plaque of some kind, I'd like to make an effort to draw on his larger than life persona and remind our students that football has been around more than just a couple of years.

I know it sounds hokey (not to be confused with a certain school west on 460) but I'd actually like to see the crowd waving their arms back and forth when "Fan the Flames" is being played. They do something similar at several Big XII schools like Kansas and Okie State but I don't know of any colleges in the Mid-Atlantic region doing it. It makes for a great visual. And if we could ever get fans to learn the alma mater, it be cool to have everyone hold their hands up with the "L" sign during the song a la "Hook 'Em" during the "Eyes of Texas". Its a great visual and helps build unity amongst a crowd.

But these are just random thoughts as I type this. I'd love top hear other great things you feel could maximize the experience.

I think the 71 flag should be raised between the band doing their pregame and 2001 playing. After the band plays, we should stop everything, have it quiet, and raise the flag then.

"Rock Royer" that is a great football name. Sounds like something you would hear in a college football movie a la Rudy. Perhaps, an actual rock that the players could tap on their way out to the stadium (maybe cliche, but c'mon, the dudes name was "Rock")

You could always hookem' with crossed arms in front of chest with left hand showing "L" and the right hand showing "U" (Oh, wait, maybe on second thought that's a little too gangster... )

definitely :nod on the Rock Royer thing- needs to be done.

as well as a Ring of Honor. Now how that ties into game atmosphere, I don't know.

Still think the tailgaiting could be done in a better area, not sure where exactly... grass would be nice, though

If we're going to keep the sirens after scores- we need to get a better one. A TRUE mechanical siren, not a wussy electronic one. Ask SKUZDRIVER- its called a "Q"

REALLY good idea! Now...you should write into the N&A about that. I bet it would generate some discussion!

Yeah...what am I thinking we have about as much chance of that happening as we would if we proposed an idea to outline the LU in neon lights, no city in Virginia would allow that to take place on a mountain

In all seriousness I spoke to JF about it and he wanted to make it happen....just as of right now solar is the only option since there in no electricity up there (for now)....one day

I'd like to add a few ideas (blatently stolen from the other thread)

1. gotta go back to bagpipes for the "71" tribute.

2. RED jerseys for homecoming. Preferably with Blue pants, but I can live with white.

3. permanent Jumbotron, or a scoreboard with those capabilities.

Maybe not an LU monogram, but there's at least one city in Virginia that has no problems with neon imagery on a hill.

I really do laugh in my mind every time I hear someone from these parts talk about how awful the monogram is. I just see that neon star blazing from a distance. I do understand that Roanoke and Lynchburg are different places, but still.

I personally would like to see a giant mechanical transforming dinosaur that eats cars at halftime.

Oh, and having watched the last couple of games on TV, everybody needs to be taught the L is made with the right hand and the U with the left hand. Yes it does look backwards to you but when you're doing it at a camera, you look like less of an idiot.

I think i noticed that parts of the "town" side were actually more rowdy this week. I have a theory as to why. That huge block of Cadets from VMI were Very loud and proud. I think it actually riled up the normally quiet townies on that side.
I think it would be an awesome improvement if some student "cheerleaders" would take it on to sit on the town side every week and rile the crowd up.

You think so?? I was thinking the exact opposite. I thought it felt pretty dead over there (more than usual). I think the Coastal and Homecoming games were the ones where the home side had the most energy. But maybe it was just the section I sit in...

I seem to have spent more time down on the FOC side of the 50 and that side was definately louder in response to the Cadets.

That could be it. I think folks really liked the thundersticks. Heard a couple of people say they wish they would have put them out again. So it looks like we've got a partial solution to the problem--we need more toys on the home side :)

We could do the thunder sticks next year if someone ponied up $30,000 for them.

From the opposite (scoreboard) end of the Baptist side, the only thing I noticed about the Keydets was that they were standing the whole time. I couldn't hear them at all.

I think we were a bit more involved, and IMHO it was just a matter of catching on finally to some of what was going on across the way with the students.
