From Chris in the Wednesday morning fishwrap ...
LU offense rolling

By Chris Lang
Lynchburg News & Advance
October 31, 2007

Liberty quarterback Brock Smith picked his spots last Saturday against Presbyterian. He worked the precision-passing game to near perfection, and when the Blue Hose were so concerned with stopping short routes that they crept up too close to the line of scrimmage, Smith struck, making two reads before hitting Dominic Bolden in stride for a 44-yard touchdown pass against man coverage.

It was just one play in what has been a season of offensive fireworks for the Flames, one that has seen a group take the leap from pedestrian to solid to spectacular in just two years under coach Danny Rocco and offensive coordinator Scott Wachenheim.

You have to agree with Lang. I noted myself that last Saturday's game vs. the Blue Hose was simply fun to watch. A well-oiled offensive machine is fun to see at any level, and the Flames have put together a good system this year. Brock has settled down, I think mainly because the line is giving him plenty o' time in the pocket finally. He looks great reading the defense. If they keep improving, it's gonna be scary...

Put more seats in the stadium. We're gonna need them.

I'm sure that we can maintain the 12K attendance beating up on the PC's & St. Fran's of the world, however, the more discerning fans tend to suspend judgement in terms of greatness until this team actually beats a worthy opponent.

With our current schedule, a good team would have finished in the 10-1 to 9-2 range. A great team would have gone 11-0 with this schedule. In my opinion, 8-3 is almost good or "just wait until next year good."

Making the playoffs is where the money is at this level and the only true measurement as to whether you can rightly define yourself as great.

The last time that I checked Elon is the only playoff caliber team that we played this year and they totally blew us out. It would be "great" for Elon if they made the playoffs, but I doubt that they'd define themselves as great unless they actually advanced in the playoffs and challenged for the title.

It would take a great team to go 10-1 or even 9-2 with this schedule. I think you forget how hard it is to win on the road. We are 2 years removed from 1-10! 2 years! Give 'em some time. They have said from day 1 their goal this year was the big south championship, and they are in a perfect position to do just that. Sure, alot of work left to be done, but they are rolling at the perfect time.

We'll win the big south by default, simply because the level of competition is subpar.

It is hardly a great accomplishment, maybe good for some, but more of a "just wait till next year kinda felling for me."

It beats the alternative, dox, which is finishing 1-10, like we did two years ago. Baby steps--win the conference this year and then shoot for the playoffs over the next few years.

Good to Great

Well then we'll see you next year. Bye.

I'm fine with criticism, but you're not going to come on this board two days before our biggest conference game and start with the negative nellie stuff.

It's "Beat Coastal" or GTFO this week.

I think it's more of a "we missed our window" feeling. We're losing a lot of key guys next year. So just enjoy the rest of this season as we'll be winning our first BSC title ever.
