Overall winner in the men's full marathon was 32-year-old Josh Cox from San Diego and Mammoth Lakes, Calif. Cox' s winning time of 2:20:54 is a new record for the U.S. Air Force Marathon and qualified him for the U.S. Olympic Team trials to be held in New York City this November.
"I ran this race for my dad, who passed away this year," Cox said. "I'm very thankful for the gifts God has given me. I'm not the owner of the gifts, just the bearer."
On a personal note, I will actually be there for the Trials. My father-in-law is running the NYC Marathon the next day, so you will have at least one supporter in Central Park! Watch for the skinny white guy wearing the LU T&F hat.
Training is going great. I had my best w-out in 5 years last week.
I won't go into details but I will say it was a long run up here at 8000ft. and my splits from 14-18 were 4:44, 4:47, 5:02, 5:04, 5:08... all told I went 26.2 in 2:22:30.
A marathon PR for altitude. I hit 147 last week mileage wise. One more solid week then I'll taper it down for race day.
I appreciate the prayers.
Because of Him,

The US Olympic Trials Marathon will be shown on nbcsports.com starting at 7:30 am on Saturday. There will be a half-hour show that will include the start on NBC beginning at 7:30 (coverage will switch over to the internet at 8:00 due to the Today show). There will also be a race recap show at either 2:00 or 2:30 in the afternoon on Saturday, but most of you will be at the game by then, so whatever.
Seriously, pray for Josh before and during the race if you get a chance! It would be absolutely huge for him to finish in the top three! How many Olympians have come from Liberty? That's what I thought. (just think, he could be in the running for a Sparky...nevermind, he doesn't play football or basketball.)
If you are looking for a couple of other people to pull for, try Ryan Hall and Dan Browne (not the book guy). Both are strong christians with great testimonies. Check out Josh's myspace page at myspace.com/coxjosh to see a workout by Ryan and his testimony. Pretty good stuff.
Ryan Hall, Stanford graduate and training partner with the Mammoth Lake crew of Dan Browne, Meb Keflezighi and Josh Cox won the race by two minutes (and Trials record) and qualified to represent the US in Beijing.
Dathan Ritzenhein and Brian Sell came in second and third respectively to round out the US representatives for 2008.

The life changes you refer to are mainly the fact that you’ve moved from Oregon to California, right?
DB: Definitely. After the national, I made a decision to come on down to Mammoth and do my (Trials) Marathon prep down here. It’s been really great. I’m training with Josh Cox and Ryan Hall and Meb. It’s a good solid group and we really support each other. It’s very positive.
2. McDougal tied Dathan's 2 mile back in High School according to this write up while racing Galen Rupp.
They didn't break the record -- Gerry Lindgren's 8:40.0 is still untouchable after 40 years -- but high schoolers Josh McDougal and Galen Rupp acquitted themselves well in the men's elite 2 mile, which was ambitiously named the New York Road Runners Club Record Challenge. Home schooled Peru NY sr McDougal was third in 8:50.40, tying Dathan Ritzenhein for 7th on Jack Shepard's all time list, and Central Catholic Portland OR sr Rupp fourth in 8:54.45, good for 14th all time.

I just got back from NYC for a weekend of watching the marathons (Trials and NYC Marathon).
What an experience! The Trials was the greatest thing I have ever been a part of as far as running goes. There were thousands of spectators lining the course. Lots of us were able to run back and forth across the park to see the lead runners 9-10 times. Ryan Hall's performance was incredible. He dominated the race and has to be a favorite to win a medal at next year's Olympic games. (He beat the second place finisher by 2 minutes and he spent the last 1000 meters high-fiving the spectators...myself included.)
Josh ran a gutsy race. It was obvious that he had one thing in mind- being in the top 3. There were lots of guys out there enjoying the experience and running for personal bests or for a respectable place in the top half or so. Josh didn't look to be interested in that. He did everything he could to cover the moves that Ryan and the other guys threw at the field. I could tell by the third lap that the nasty course was really starting to get to him. I'm not sure exactly where he dropped out, but I didn't see him go by at the 18 mile mark.
I'm sure he isn't happy with the outcome of the day, but there were bigger things to think about after the race. 28 year old Ryan Shay (former US marathon champion and strong contender for the olympic team) collapsed and died about 200 feet from where I was standing on the course, only 5.5 miles into the race. Those of us in the crowd didn't know exaclty what was going on, but news of the tragedy started to leak into the spectators as the race went on. I know Josh was a friend of Ryan's and this has to be really difficult for him. My guess is that his performance in the race is far secondary to his thoughts about his friend's family.
Congrats to Josh on his attempt! I hope that he will continue training and get back that competitive edge that he had several years ago.
I just found this on josh's web site...http://www.joshcox.com/
It is incredible that he was even able to do as well as he did on Saturday. You are a true inspiration, Josh!
Thanks to everyone for your support and well wishes today and over the past few months. The journey has been amazing but not all journeys end at the promised land. Training with Meb, Dan, Ryan, Mike and the rest of the Mammoth crew has been amazing.
Unfortunately, I was unable to show my fitness today due to an injury that flared up a week and a half ago. I was in PR shape, my body was ready to go and I felt great out on the course. Until my left arch gave out.
The arch flared up last Sunday after I ran 19 quarters in a new pair of flats. On Monday, a knot, the size of a large marble, showed up. I had it worked on all week and was relatively confident it would hold up for the race.
I strained it on an uphill portion, I think around mile 11 or 12. I tried to finish - I was walking/jogging/hopping - I even untied my shoe and massaged the foot but at 30k I couldn’t walk without pain and didn’t want to do any long term damage.
I was picked up by the paramedics, they removed the shoe and my foot swelled. I asked to be taken to the post race area but after seeing the swelling the EMT suggested it could very well be broken. I was then transported to Roosevelt Hospital and X-ray’s were negative. They put me in a boot and suggested I see an orthopedist when I return to California.
The deposits we made this fall are in the bank and I’ll be coming back soon for a withdrawal.
Congrats to Ryan, Ritz and Sell. A job well done - you will represent us well!
