El Scorcho wrote:Okay, here's how I'm breaking it down. I just shared this with SJ...

I think that our offense consistently has produced enough points that it should be enough to win games. However, our defense is so terrible that it just doesn't happen. Then, when we're in the clutch, our offensive play calling falls apart and our QB's inconsistencies are magnified by quite a bit.

We scored enough to win at W&M and again tonight...except our defense didn't back us up. Then we're put in these clutch situations where we seem to have trouble with calls and we're forced to rely too heavily on Brock.

At least that's how I see it right now.
Good point.

12 of 15 on third down is RIDICULOUS.

ELon: 17-31-1 0 TD 222 yards

Total: 52-87-3 3 TD 526 yards

59.7% passing, 1 TD, 1 INT, 175 yards per game
And we trust him with the game on the line..

funny.

G'nite guys.

Against Division I teams with scholarships, our defense is giving up this much:

Run Pass Tot
171 - 353 - 524
121 - 401 - 522
267 - 226 - 493

186.3 - 326.6 - 513

In comparison, our offense is only doing this:

Run Pass Tot
182 - 203 - 385
74 - 258 - 332
181 - 101 - 282

145.6 - 187.3 - 333 per game

Hello! If we cannot fix this, it won't matter how consistent Brock Smith is. This is ludicrous.

There's another school in our conference that's averaging this:

Given up:
302.4 - 71.8 - 374.2

Gained:
108.8 - 195 - 303.8

They're 1-4.

Another is averaging this:

Given up:
131.5 - 195.2 - 326.8

Gained:
108.5 - 258.0 - 366.5

They're 2-3.

Just showing you where we'd be if we played a different schedule.

The playcalling on the last series was odd. Yes Boldin should have had caught the ball even thought he was hit early. WHy go long??? We haven't thrown deep all night. Alll we needed was a FG and their was plenty of time left to get the first down, no need to go deep there.

Good to Great !

Anyone else getting tired of this? At some point we have to start believing we can win.

I'm normally not vocal after losses, and I try to stay positive, but tonight was just the tipping point for me.

Toledo is a middle of the pack FCS team. The Wofford's, NDSU's, etc of the world would beat them by 20+. They're not that good.

No defense = offensive shootout

Without consistent QB play we will always lose the shootout.

And Lord help us if the other team's defense is worth anything.

That about sums it up for me. Starts with the defense. We can't give away 513 yards per game and win.

Ok, I've had a little while to digest this.

Scorcho and others, I still don't think you can blame this on play calling. Seems like we had the right play called, just a penalty. If no penalty we are down to the 30, and talking about how great we are. It's very dissapointing, we don't know how to win. Our defense is pathetic. I don't know how that happened. We had such a good defense last year, and now we can't stop anyone.

What is our problem on defense? Is it our line or secondary? Are we not getting to the QB or is the secondary playing too loose? I had my doubts about our D line before the season started.

I just crunched some numbers that made me sick.

Here are our stats vs Division I opponents with scholarships:
Gained:
145.6 - 187.3 - 333

Given up:
186.3 - 326.6 - 513
In contrast, here is another team that we're playing this year against Division I teams:
Gained:
121 - 229.75 - 350.75

Given up:
188.25 - 272.5 - 460.75
That team?

Presbyterian. Averaging more yards and giving up less. With half as many scholarships.

I don't know about tonight, but the rest of the games it's been no pressure on the qb, and we have been laying off their wideouts about 10-15 yards. They break a tackle and gain 15-20 yards. Also, the tight end over the middle has KILLED us.

You can't blame the "pressure" against Elon. You can't blame "pressure" tonight. They're throwing screens and passes in the flats all over us to negate the pressure and speed that we have coming at them.

I know the screens killed us against Elon. What do you do to stop that then?

At times pressure is a problem but it really just boils down to our DB's...when you have teams (W&M) that are looking ONLY to our #1 DB b/c they know at some point he'll be beat, there's a problem....it's been this way all year...look at how many big plays....then we back off b/c they are getting beat then we get picked apart...it's disappointing b/c our LB core is so good.

Another reason we're having problems getting pressure is b/c our LB's are so good in coverage and as I mentioned before we need all the help we can get back there

You get your hands up to knock down 3-4 balls (Coach said that after the Elon game) and you tackle when you get the guy wrapped up. You can't let the receiver break 2-3 tackles on a screen.

Do we have the personnel that can make those tackles on a consistent basis?

Read all of the above....the answer is NO, when I say DB's are a problem it's not just b/c of coverage it's just all around play

No it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that Toledo isn't a great football team. They will probably win one more game maybe two this year but it would have been a feather in our cap. A good tool for recruiting but oh well. I guess we will here that our only goal for this year is still possible - a Big South Championship -(Yeah!)

I don't remember having this problem last year and we returned most of our starters. I don't see where loosing Rojas, Estes, and Horn would cause so much of a dropoff.
