Kentucky: This is no April Fool's joke, so don't go there. This is serious: Tubby Smith is going to shake up his substandard staff this offseason, and the most serious move he's considering is the addition of Buzz Peterson. Yes, that Buzz Peterson. The former Tennessee, Tulsa and Appalachian State head coach won in his first year at Coastal Carolina, but he has been looking to move on. Had Steve Alford gotten the Indiana job, for example, Peterson would have joined him in Bloomington. Peterson is exactly the kind of recruiter Smith's staff lacks: a good one.

You really had to think that Buzz was at Coastal for only one year. I don't consider this that shocking at all.

Over on the Coastal board they are relaying that a local television sportscast is stating that Buzz is upset that the proposed arena that enticed him to Conway i sbeing pushed back. That would make sense why he was looking to jump ship so soon if he felt hoodwinked.

Tubby at least has some sort of an ACC background. I think he was an Asst for Holland at UVA, and he was rumored as a candidate there last year. I think his wife has family near C'Ville. Raleigh would be closer than UK. I'm not sure Smith is ready to go into another hornet's nest. He gets pounded by the UK fans worse than Slow it Down Sendek ever did at State.

im just playing devil's advocate. why wouldn't tubby go? most UK fans are not tubby fans, and though state fans are tough, they are not tougher than UK fans. tubby was never an assistant at UVA, but wis wife does have several ties to cville.

Why? Because NC State is a 2nd tied ACC program that has the odds stacked heavily against it ever competing for a National Championship. At UK he has all the resources and the marquee program to get it done.

But then again, if he feels the axe is about to fall I guess that could be a consideration as well.

again mr. objectivity strikes again! sly would you want to hang around a UK program where a lot of people wish you were gone, and that you cannot do better than rick pitino?? i think i would rather go where i was wanted, and accept a good challenge. the right coach could challenge and be a maryland that could occaionally win the ACC and a national championship, which maryland has done.

Back to Buzz, I get the feeling he might be putting feelers out there at the coaches convention in order to accomplish two things:

1. See where his value is right now
2. Put pressure on the CCU administration & City of Conway to get the arena back on track

He's saying all the things you would expect him to say about working on recruiting and not being contacted by anyone (schools & coaches always use intermediaries like agents in the early stages). But where there is smoke there generally is some fire.

Tubby is a Carolina guy. Remember he went to High Point. I think Raleigh would be a good fit for him though there are few jobs better than UK. The fans don't really like Tubby very much there it seems and he has already won a national Championship there. The timing may be perfect. If he gets the job there the ACC would have more minority coaches than white. Tubby would in a sense make history again by shifting that tide as he did when he was the first black coach at Kentucky. I am sure there are no racial elements here of course but I like to point things out for fun.

And contrary to a report here yesterday, Peterson said he has not yet made a final decision on whether to accept or turn down the offer. He must really be upset with something we don't know about if he makes that move. Perhaps the arena deal is bigger than we thought. I doubt it is because fo th schools like has been suggested by some.

If he does leave, that's bad for the Big South in my opinion. I like seeing more strong teams in the league.

I think Buzz will listen long and hard. I'm sure Furman can offer more money, and the facilities and campus of the two schools are night and day. Plus Buzz already has experience in the Socon. Plus, if he could be successful at App, he can certainly be successful at Furman. As a secondary Furman fan, it would be tough to pull for Buzz after coaching at Coastal.

I have a feeling that if he head to the Paladins then it will be a CCU-type quick stop before he looks for a higher profile gig. But I'm beginning to get the feeling that he just likes being wanted.

Peterson mulls Friday meeting with Furman
Chanticleers coach still has no official offer from Paladins

Buzz Peterson has a tentative interview set with Furman Athletics Director Gary Clark this weekend, Peterson said late Wednesday night.

Peterson said he is undecided whether he will keep the meeting about the head coaching job at Furman. Meanwhile, he refuted reports that surfaced this week that he had already received a job offer.

AllSportsTalk.com reported that Peterson was offered the job last week, and that he was considering it.

"I don't know where [AllSportsTalk.com] got that," Peterson said by phone from Asheville, N.C., where he was on vacation with his family. "They have not made an offer."

Peterson said the only media outlet he had spoken with in regard to any job opening was The Sun News, and during that conversation, he said he will decide this afternoon whether he will keep his meeting with Clark.

Peterson has never said he would not listen to outside proposals, saying only his next job would have to be the "right" job.

Many view the move to a mid-level Southern Conference school a lateral one, especially after the Chanticleers' 20-10 season. Former Paladins coach Larry Davis - who resigned to take an assistant position at Cincinnati - had a base salary slightly higher than Peterson's $100,000 annual rate at CCU.

Furman is 45 minutes from Asheville, where Peterson grew up.

Coastal Carolina Athletics Director Warren Koegel was upset with the reports that Peterson had an offer in hand. "I'm not a happy camper about it," Koegel said. "One person suggests it, and all of a sudden it becomes news. That's what kills you sometimes."

Koegel said only one school, Furman, has asked to speak with Peterson about an opening.
