As I am not (yet) a DirecTV subscriber, I was unaware of the coming HD upgrades for DirecTV. They just added 21 new HD channels bringing their current total to 33. They will have 70 by the end of October and over 100 by the end of this year. At the same time, they're changing their method for delivering the HD channels using an MPEG4 decoder that gets attached to your DirecTV HD receiver. What that means for you is that HD channels will look MUCH better than they have, and some HD broadcasts will even be at full HD resolution, 1080p.

Color me impressed. The HD package with an HD DVR is only going for $69.99 a month with $199 down.

Sorry for the advertisment, but for sports lovers this should be a huge deal. The cable companies don't have the bandwidth to get close to that many HD channels for quite a while. At the same time, Verizon is rolling out their fiber-based television very slowly. This may finally make me jump to an HDTV and DirecTV.

FYI: If you already subscribe to DirecTV's current HD stuff, make sure you get the MPEG4 box (called a BBC box) before the end of October. It's free. More info here: http://www.engadgethd.com/2007/08/11/ar ... -channels/

Once you watch programming in HD, it's difficult to go back. Kudos to DirecTV.

It was a GREAT day for HD owners yesterday. Many more channels now on-line. Best of all, TBS is now in HD and that means HD playoffs in MLB (at least the first round).

I have a brandy-new LCD HDTV but don't subscribe to HDTV programming.

would I have to add another level @ $70/mo in ADDITION to my current subscription to get those channels?

I already pay @ $60/mo for regular service and I'm pretty sure the boss will NOT allow an upgrade.

If I'm not mistaken, I believe it's only $10 a month more for the basic HD channel set plus the cost of the HD receiver. Don't take my word for it, though. I'm sure DirecTV knows much better than I do.

if someone said someone on flame fans was getting taken to the cleaners on paying for some sort of technology, medic is the first person that would pop into my head..

Boss? Cinch them up, put on a pair of pants and order what you want. (You can always order on the phone and play dumb ya know, something about a free 3 year trial period, she will eventually forget about it). :D
