The Flames have a good chance of coming out of this next tournament 3-0. A quick glance of the competition shows USF as their toughest opponent. USF is 2 -1 so far this season and have a big front row. The middles are 6-2 and 6-3 with one of the outsides at 6-2. Sounds like another team we just played. Wright State is 1-7 so far and The Citadel at 0-3.

If the Flames play their game, it looks like a good weekend. The schedule shows that we will have Live Stats available to us. Anyone else scout these teams and see something different?

Last year we blanked the Citadel 3-0 (and one game was 30-9), so we shouldn't have any problem with them. I agree that USF will be our toughest opponent. Good luck Lady Flames.

Who would have thought a freshman would have such an immediate impact as she is having (not to mention being a DS playing Outside) but she has and she's going to be out, I honestly am hoping we can go 1-2 for the weekend come back lick our wounds and she'll be back ready to play. There will be two very good recruits watching this weekend, most dont like the fact that they dont have their best squad to show them, but I think it's a positive to show them that one person can make that much of a difference and it could be them. One is a big time hitter form Tx and one from Ohio...the Oh girl is Boggs (the stellar setter that has already committed)

I have seen the girl from texas play back in the summer camp. she is definitely the real deal. she can hit, block, and is a physical player when it comes to the net.

I wonder if Jennifer Belk Vaden is using her Texas connections to get this girl.

South Florida Drops Lady Flames in Four Games

September 7, 2007
Dayton, Ohio

South Florida outside hitter Marcela Gurgel led all players in both kills and digs, tallying 17 of each during her team’s 3-1 victory over Liberty in the opening match of the Wright State Raider Challenge, Friday afternoon at C.J. McLin Gymnasium.

As I sat watching the score-tracking website, it seemed like the teams were evenly matched, but that they had one highly effective OH that put up kill after kill.

I sure hope the team can rally to beat Wright State.

I believe it is the same club team

Nice win today to get back to 500 for the tourny....if we can pull out a victory tonite at 5:00 then that would be unreal to go 2 - 1 without your leading outside hitter this year

It was great to see LU win this last game... makes for a nice bus ride home. I like the stats. I like the three wins and out.

Go Liberty!!!

That's what I'm talking about....if we can go 2-1 without KB I'm pretty sure we'd be 3-0 with her...if you look at the score of the game we lost, I believe that's safe to say!

I saw all 3 matches, and I believe we are starting to come together as a team now. Allison put up some good offensive work in Karyl's absence. Our defense needs to have a little more consistency for us to beat teams like USF. We had periods of great play followed by times where it looked like we had glue on our shoes. Overall, though, I think you all would have been proud of the effort and level of play the Lady Flames exhibited. Once we develop the consistency of play for an entire match, we will be beating teams like USF. :D

We saw Courtney and her family at the tournament. They seemed really excited about her being with us next year. A prospect for 2009 was there also. Coach is very high on her. She and her mom were all smiles while talking with the coaches.

looks like a pretty good weekend! the ladies seem to be playing well early. i like this scheduling too instead of going west early and taking a major beating like we have over the years.

All that I can say is that so far this season I feel that LU volleyball is back to the same level it was when Chris Phillips was coach which is a very good thing. In this tourney we were without our best player and more than held our own against a very solid South Florida team and beat everyone else. We are very young so good things are in store this year and in years to come.
