From the Birmingham fishwrap:
Despite NCAA decision, JSU researching going big time

The NCAA may have barred the door to its big-time football subdivision for now, but Jacksonville State officials said the Gamecocks are still going full-speed ahead with their study into moving up.

The NCAA on Friday announced an immediate four-year moratorium on accepting new Division I members and moves between its subdivisions - the Football Bowl Subdivision, the Football Championship Subdivision, Division II and Division III.

Jacksonville State's board of trustees formed a committee at its July meeting to study the feasibility of leaving the FCS, formerly known as Division I-AA, to play in the Bowl Subdivision (Division I-A).

I assume we'll take a similar stance. We will continue to make preparations. The only issue will be whether or not the NCAA changes the eligibility standards.

That would be wise since success is where opportunity meets preparation. Put the preparation in so when the moratorium is lifted, they'll be ready with a lot of the leg work under their belt. This also alleviates the pressure on the argument as we know now that LU will have 4-5 years to establish a proven success record at the FCS level...which should appease both sides of the LU Football "feasibility and timetable" debate.

Though Jacksonville State is a little further south than the schools LU faces now...Is this a possbility of a team that could be part of a new league you've speculated before along with a possible JMU team (from your speculation in the JMU stadium expansion thread)?

Things could be aligning quite nicely for LU's aspirations as the moratorium will hold teams who wanted to jump ship now...to a timeframe that proves more conducive for LU to get its "house" in order (i.e athletic moneys, stadium, size of student body, etc.)

Jacksonville State is claiming they already were in the midst of plans to move up prior to the moratorium so they should be grandfathered out. If it works for them I wonder if we could make a similar claim. Here's a story from the Anniston, AL fishwrap:
JSU still plans to make jump

JACKSONVILLE — Despite an NCAA moratorium designed to slow movement within its ranks, Jacksonville State says it remains committed to a fast track for taking its football program to the highest classification in the game.

The school’s board of trustees met with university president Bill Meehan for nearly 90 minutes Saturday to update the progress of the Gamecocks’ exploration of moving to the Football Bowl Subdivision, formerly known as Division I-A.

Out of the meeting came plans to send a letter to the NCAA confirming that JSU’s desire to move up was in place before the moratorium went into effect, with the aim of being grandfathered into the process.

Leave the young man alone, Sly. It's I-A and I-AA regardless of what you call it.

shuckcb04: You should march right on up to Indianapolis and let the NCAA know that. We were all fine with I-A and I-AA for football. They, apparently, were not. FCS and BCS are in.

Yeah. Obviously my brain is refusing to cooperating with the new names. I knew that, and still that's not what my fingers typed.
