Ill may get flack for posting this, but he does make some good points.....

ONE MONTH from The Anniversary, I'm thinking another 9/11 would help America.
What kind of a sick bastard would write such a thing?

A bastard so sick of how splintered we are politically - thanks mainly to our ineptitude in Iraq - that we have forgotten who the enemy is.

It is not Bush and it is not Hillary and it is not Daily Kos or Bill O'Reilly or Giuliani or Barack. It is global terrorists who use Islam to justify their hideous sins, including blowing up women and children.

Iraq has fractured the U.S. into jigsaw pieces of competing interests that encourage our enemies. We are deeply divided and division is weakness.

Most Americans today believe Iraq was a mistake. Why?

Not because Americans are "anti-war."

Americans have turned their backs because the war has dragged on too long and we don't have the patience for a long slog. We've been in Iraq for four years, but to some it seems like a century. In contrast, Britain just pulled its soldiers out of Northern Ireland where they had been, often being shot at, almost 40 years.

I don't think that's true. Most Americans have turned their backs because it seems obvious that we didn't have a good reason for going in there while at the same time we were engaged in a more important campaign in another country. So now with nothing good coming out of Iraq, bin Laden still on the run and American soldiers being killed every day, it's not that they've become impatient. Impatience would imply that there's a good reason for us to be there. Americans are simply tired of fighting a fight that has nothing to do with the defense of our country and our people.

Well first, Bin Laden is not doing anything. He was the mastermind, now he's in hiding doing nothing. To think killing him will solve everything is silly. But more importantly

Setting aside what this was originally about, do you honestly think that Iraq has nothing to do with the defense of our country? Dumb question I guess since you just said that. But that's crazy. There's no neutral outcome here, Iraq is now going to be either an western-friendly domocracy (begging for an american military base;)) or a anti-western islamofundy freakshow in the center of the MidEast.

the Iraq war was needed for our security...I believe that, but the leadership of this country (both democrats and republicans) have absolutely no vision whatsoever...if they had any vision at all this could've ended months ago...I am not saying I know the answers, because I do not...but the reasons why we elect people we think are good leaders is because we expect them to answer these tough questions and make solutions for these issues...they haven't done either...and that is the truth...people are either so anti-bush that they think the war was stupid to begin with and had no point beyond oil...or people are so up Bush's butt that he can do no wrong.....

the war on terror isn't winnable as Bush says it is. if its a war on terror then the purpose is to eliminate terrorism, which will never ever happen.

If you think a war is not winable then it is not. I am glad earlier Americans in WWII thought we could win instead of the sissies America now has. We could have won in Vietnam is fhe congress had stayed of the military way and let the military go ahead with its job.

it's not the fact that americans are sissies, it's just being realistic. as long as the USA exists there will always be terrorists wanting to attack us, it's just simple as that.

So terrorism is always going to exist. You have two choices either you fight the muslim nuts or you don't and let them continue to attack and kill Americans. What do they want? The destruction of America and Christianity. This is not like the IRA, you cannot sit down with them and negotiate. They would love to see the USA become Afghanistian WEST.
Any war you fight you pay a price. To the politicans (both parties) who want to cut and run out of Iraq, they remind me of a basketball team I coached againist. Their coach said if we didn't call off our pressure at the start of the 2nd half they would walk. A bunch of quitters!

did i say the war was pointless? no, i said it's unwinnable if the ultimate goal is to end terrorism

So instead of letting them kill Americans in America, we let em kill Americans in their front yard. Great logic.

Correct, but he is still ultimately responsible for 9/11 and we never caught him. Instead, we sent the bulk of our resources in to topple Saddam.
LUconn wrote:Setting aside what this was originally about, do you honestly think that Iraq has nothing to do with the defense of our country?
I honestly think it had nothing to do with the defense of our country. They were not threatening to invade or attack us. They had no WMD's or any weapons capable of reaching the U.S. Even if Iraq becomes a completely stable and friendly democracy, what threat have we eliminated? We should have stayed home, and we should come home now. Iraq is nothing like war was intended to be.
4everfsu wrote:We could have won in Vietnam is fhe congress had stayed of the military way and let the military go ahead with its job.
Vietnam was not our fight. We should never have gone there either.

And the price we are paying is not worth what we gain, even if we win this war. The price is too high for something that will have no benefit to our citizens. Even if you don't think the lives of soldiers are "valuable" since most of them signed up voluntarily, the price of this war is killing our country at a time when our economy can't afford it. We're spending billions and billions of dollars of money borrowed from China on a war that will accomplish absolutely nothing, even if it is won.

Bush War Adviser Says Draft Worth a Look

Aug 10 06:25 PM US/Eastern

By RICHARD LARDNER

WASHINGTON (AP) - Frequent tours for U.S. forces in Iraq and Afghanistan have stressed the all-volunteer force and made it worth considering a return to a military draft, President Bush's new war adviser said Friday.

"I think it makes sense to certainly consider it," Army Lt. Gen. Douglas Lute said in an interview with National Public Radio's "All Things Considered."

"And I can tell you, this has always been an option on the table. But ultimately, this is a policy matter between meeting the demands for the nation's security by one means or another," Lute added in his first interview since he was confirmed by the Senate in June.

Since destroying Israel would be such a great thing.

The war in Iraq was the right action to take, it was just undertaken with the wrong motives. Being a history teacher, I would point you to a little country called Germany in the 1930's. Great Britain and France were charged with the task of keeping the Germans under wraps following the Great War and the Treaty of Versailles. They didn't do their job and instead appeased Hitler and the Nazis until the invasion of Poland in 1939. You know the rest of the story.

Fast forward to 1991. The UN resolutions put in place required that Iraq follow similar guidelines in their reconstruction. Saddam refused to comply with the demands and were in line for discipline. The spineless Frenchman and Russians didn't want a confrontation because they were illegaly making loads of cash off of the Oil for Food program.

If Bush had pushed this argument more, the situation may have played out much differently.

On a personal note, I lost a high school buddy a year and a half ago in Iraq. I know he enlisted in the Army so he could serve his country and go to Iraq to be a part of the rebuilding process. He was prepared for the potential consequences, but he felt that it was something that he should do. I'm proud to have known him, but I still wonder if his sacrifice and that of 3,600+ others was the only option we had, given the circumstances.
