There is a stronger focus these days on Bahamian heroes. The name change of Discovery Day to Heroes Day is ample indication of the move of a nation to pay tribute to its stalwarts of the respective eras.

I commend the Ministry of Sports for dedicating the month of November to the country’s sporting heroes. Over the years, despite the best intentions, unfortunately some of the significant contributors to nation building through sports participation have been overlooked.

To this end, in this space, attention is paid to connecting sporting heroes with the different generations and highlighting others who somehow slip under the national radar.

Today, the spotlight is on Shane Pinder who coaches the Liberty flames of Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia. Pinder took over the flames in 2004 as head coach and has evolved to the top tier of collegiate coaching in the United States. That’s correct.
