someone find HMO and have him light a fire under his pal Pinder.

I know that the completition has been tough but is it our team not playing well or Carolyn Douglas being out that is affecting our play? It seems like we are competitive in some of the games but just not putting together a run at the end to finish them off and we fade at the end. Of course there are games such as the first Duke game where we were never in it. I would think that we would turn things around when conference play begins.

Svandive wrote:Winthrop and Campbell have aweful good records for sure. I am curious to there strength of schedule. I can honestly say that we are playing high level teams but if we are what we should be we would expect to win a few of those "tough matches". What is not good is that we are getting swept in almost every match 3-0. Just not sure what to think about our team right now in light of the scheduling and maybe we can turn things around.

The schedules of WU and CU look to be softer than LU's but not that much. Some mid majors but more MEAC and not as many top conference teams. South Carolina and Georgetown the only common opponents but WU put a W on SC 3-2 and also beat GU like we did.

Those schedules based on some cursory research do not seem like much to crow about except maybe three teams combined between the two. now I will say that not having Douglas does affect things although Babcock and McQuitery are trying to take up the slack behind Happel

Looking purely at the numbers, one would think that this isnt a good team. Taking a deeper look though, you see the effect of being without Caroline Douglas, plus the graduation of Loren Thomas, plus the increased work for Stapleton (who appeared in 6 total sets last year...she already has been in 7 sets over 5 matches) with Craycraft set to graduate after this year. Also, you have two freshmen who are in the rotation this year in Babcock and McQuitery, and they are developing an on-court relationship with the setters. The relationship between a setter and a hitter can be very much compared to the relationship between a pitcher and catcher on baseball. When you have a pitcher and catcher you have a longstanding relationship, you do better because you both have an understanding of how the other operates. When you start working with a new pitcher or catcher, you don't have that connection and it takes time to develop that connection and sometimes the on field product suffers during that learning process. As we move back to the volleyball team, Craycraft has that connection Happel and Rollins because they have played together for the last 3 seasons, so she knows what sets work with those two, and even Monica Johnson to a degree, having played with her last year. Stapleton will have a chance to develop that connection with Douglas (when she returns from injury), as well as Babcock and McQuitery, and work on the connection with Happel and Rollins to improve the sets she gives those two as the season progresses.

Add all that to the fact that the level of competition this year is significantly tougher and you have a pretty good recipe for a 1-9 start.

Babcock has never played outside hitter before she has always played middle blocker and she is currently playing outside hitter position for Caroline Douglas until she recovers from her stress fracture. She is in the mix playing outside hitter along with Lillie Happel.

Ansley Gebben was a big part of the rotation last year and she's not on the roster for whatever reason. She was an outside hitter and was good at digs which they seem to be lacking this year. Aside from Happel there is no power on the front line and therefore our "kills" are being dug out and returned with greater authority from more talented teams. Our kill percentage and errors is atrocious.

We can't win every year...some rebuilding will happen. Let's give Pinder some time to get this young team going. It's all about the BSC tournament. I know Pinder - He is not one to ever accept losing - we will be alright.

We just lost 3-1 to UMBC. Now I am starting to worry what is going on. This was supposed to be a solid team this year.
